    Default Unknown error (1)

I have been trying to downgrade to 1.1.1 from 1.1.2, and each time I do it I get an error "The iPhone "IPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1). I have tried with Mac, Vista and XP, same result. Is their any solution, or my phone is totally bricked.

The reason you got this message because your iphone is not on DFU mode yet.

This is a very very tricky step to get it work, it took me to repeat the process for 10times in order to get it right, because it was my first time and I don't know how does DFU mode looks like.

Happened to me as well couple days ago when I did a downgrade for my friend.
When your phone on DFU mode properly, the screen should be black out as if off but your pc still able to detect the hardware found which is your phone.

From than you can do the restore again and after restore finished it will appear a message error 1015.

Continue the rest of the steps of tutorials you found.

    Good luck with that

    same for me...

when i locate the firmware i want for the itunes to restore it extracts it and leave me with... "it cannot be restored. an unknown error occurred (1)" right after the extraction.

I've tried to download the firmware (both 1.0.2 and 1.1.1) from various sources, renaming it all kinds of way, extract and locate partially, i downgraded itunes from 7.5 to 7.4.2. i've tried to set the iphone to the DFU mode all the ways that are described all over the internet. i can't even remember what else i've tried. of course i've read all the forums thoroughly and did everything repeatedly

    any other ideas?

Do the power/home button thing and when you get the "connect to itunes" message start ibrickr 0.91 and select "downgrade to 1.0.2" and shift/restore in iTunes to 1.1.1. When done you'll get an itunes error message but just select the 2nd option in ibrickr to fix it and boot it up.

Are you running iTunes 7.5? For some reason, I could not restore / downgrade to 1.1.1 from 1.1.2 with iTunes 7.5. I had to use another computer that has iTunes 7.4x to complete the task.

when i download the firmware, it get extracted automatically by the archive utility. so in order to make it "readable" for the itunes i have to wrap it again. either i use stuffit to .zip it or the archive utility to .cpgz. then i change the end to something _Restore.ipsw but then... still no luck. do you think that could be the problem. but i don't seem to know how to disable the automatic expanding.
