[1.1.3 iPhone out of the box]
You won't be able to software unlock your iPhone at the moment. Do not read or try out any of the 1.1.3 software unlock guides: they'll only confuse you, and may permanentely brick your iPhone.
However you can downgrade and jailbreak the iPhone so it'll function as an expensive iPod Touch.
It is possible to hardware unlock a 1.1.3 OTB iPhone, though this invloves manually removing the baseband chip, and some other technical things, which require expensive tools (hardware, so you won't be able to pirate those tools and get them for free).
[1.1.2 iPhone out of the box]
Since your iPhone has bootloader version 4.6 you won't be able to software unlock it, not even on firmware version 1.1.2. If you want to use the telephone function you either need to hardware unlock the iPhone (which will be way easier than hardware unlocking a 1.1.3 iPhone, though still requires some skills) or buy a xSim (there are a lot of these sims around, just search the forums (hypercard, kingsim, stealthsim etc.).
If you hardware unlocked the iPhone (so opened the iPhone etc., not the xSim method), you will be able to fully software unlock 1.1.3, with the newest baseband. If you use an xSim, do not update to the 1.1.3 baseband. This'll brick your iPhone. If you want to use 1.1.3, you need to soft-upgrade the iPhone. This means that you update everything, except the baseband.
[1.1.1, 1.0.2, 1.0.1 or 1.0.0 out of the box]
You will be able to run a fully software unlocked iPhone with firmware version 1.1.3 and the newest baseband! First I recommend you to upgrade to 1.1.2 (do not start iTunes now, you need to go through an easy but important process before hitting the upgrade button!) using the following guide: http://iphone.unlock.no/#Start After you followed that guide, you'll have a software unlocked 1.1.2 iPhone. Then you have to decide: There are currently three methods to unlock 1.1.3:
- A soft-upgrade. This updates the iPhone to firmware version 1.1.3, though it doesn't update your baseband, which means that the unlock will remain intact, though also means that you need to install a a few of fixes to get some 1.1.3 features working and some bugs fixed.
- AnySIM 1.3. Zibree leaked this version fo AnySIM before it was finished. It contains a lot of bugs and may brick your iPhone. My recommendation is that you don't use it, though some people reported that it works like a charm.
- 1.1.3 IPSF Remixed by GeoHot: This'll modify your seczone, which means that the unlock is upgrade and restore resistant. It's the best way to unlock an iPhone, though it isn't fully tested at the moment and there may be a lot of bugs in the current version.
As you may notice: All methods have their goods and bads. If you don't want to risk your iphone, do not upgrade it to 1.1.3. Wait some time, there'll be a bug free unlock and then you'll be able to upgrade without worries. If you want to play, read the topics about the various methods and decide which one you are going to use.
[Troubleshooting the soft-upgrade]
TatesMan wrote a great FAQ about the soft-upgrade. if you experience any problems with the soft-upgrade, make sure that you read his faq first before you start posting questions! http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25450
[The ultimate: Why can't I unlock my OTB 1.1.3?]
Well, of course you can use the difficult hardware unlock, but al software unlocks and the 1.1.2 hardware unlock won't work. This is, because you won't be able to downgrade the iPhone's baseband. It may sound strange, but in order to downgrade, you need a need a newer secpack, which basically means that you need to wait 'till Apple releases a firmware version with a new secpack.

Reason: bootloder > seczone

Thanks drg! I changed it immediately.

nice FAQ, didn't notice it when I posted mine. I added the following text to my FAQ:
I hope that you like it. If you had another idea about combining, which will be better for the community, you are free to change it.
And maybe it's a good idea to have a FAQ in both the general and unlocking forum. I know that everyone hates crossposting, but even though I think most people will look for the faq in the unlocking section, also a lot of people will look for it in the general section (and maybe one or two beginners will use the search button..., or, wait, sorry, I also didn't notice his post....), and if they don't find it immediately, they start posting....

EXCELLENT !!!.
Now I hope people will read it.

A simple but useful question.
On a 16gb OTB 1.1.3 : Is it possible to use the Jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone with Cingular SIM (no iPhone contract?)?? In other words, does 1.1.3 OTB radio work with Cingular/ATT sims which have never been activated for iPhones??
Thanks a lot
Kiran

I do not think that will work, I currently have an OTB 1.1.3 that has been jailbroken through downgrading and upgrading back to 1.1.3. However, the phone portion does not function even though I have a legit Cingular/AT&T SIM.
