Default UK - Edge coverage by network and by location

    Hi,

My Iphone is in the UK - should have it tomorrow.

I live and work in Reading, Berkshire. I cannot receive Edge coverage on:

    - Vodafone in Woodley, Reading TVP, Reading Town Centre. (Actually I have never received Edge coverage anywhere apart from Hamble, Hampshire). Phone Used - Blackberry Pearl
    - My friends O2 Motorala Phone supports Edge but he has not received Edge anywhere in Reading, Twyford and he thinks not in central London either. Exact same results from O2 XDA Orbit (no Edge anywhere).

Anyone else care to share their findings? My contract is up very soon and I need to know who to switch to. Id rather stay with Vodafone unless some other network can offer me good prices/Edge coverage in Reading. I think Orange would be the best but they have terrible data packages...

    Neil

I have been on 02 with Edge for a month on my iphone and I have had no problems getting a Edge connection in fact I have been all over the country (I live in London) and had no problems at all. The place I thought I would not get Edge is the Lake District where Edge worked fine.....

Very interesting - and the IPhone distinguishes between GPRS and EDGE clearly?

beatleben: be careful that you are actually getting edge.

most operators edge coverage is very poor in the uk at the moment. i would be genuinely surprised if any operator had upgrade dtheir existing radio kit to e-gprs (edge) around the lake district.

lots of phones lie btw. they tell you they have an edge connection when in fact all you have is plain old gprs.

only way to tell is through a decent diagnostic tool, or by "guessing" from looking at how fast your downloads are comming down.

I know O2 is busy trying to upgrade their network to edge right now, probably becuase they are about to launch the iphone. However i also know that vodafone has good edge coverage through the whole of europe, so they may be about to upgrade the uk too for all i know.

Again - to reinforce this point, even O2 have said they can only offer 30% nationwide EDGE coverage by November. This means its probably < 30% right now. It would be great news if you did get EDGE coverage everywhere Beatleben but that does seem unlikely.

My iPhone should arrive soon and I was wondering what operator to go for.

I'm currently with Three, which is a real shame seeing as I can't use my USIM in the iPhone My contract doesn't expire until mid December, but I wondered whether anyone is doing PAYG with inclusive DATA or anything like that?

I'll probably end up just using it with WiFi until I can get a new contract at the end of the year, but it'd be nice to be able to use it online via GPRS while I'm out and about.

    So, PAYG with Data anyone?

Hmm, sorry for being lazy and not doing some googling myself beforehand...

I've just found that Orange do SIM only Monthly contracts with flat rate Data for an additional 8 per month.

So, the 20 per month option (125 xnet mins plus 500 texts) plus the 8 data works out cheaper than getting a T-Mobile PAYG with their 1 per day flat rate data.

Looks like I'll be switching to the 25 per month Orange deal once my Three contract expires: 600 xnet mins, 125 texts and unlimited landline calls!

No stupid 18 month contract, and 33 per month to Orange gives a much better deal than the 35 per month O2 iPhone contract!
