    Wink Two newbie questions

    Hello

I am new to the iphone world and obtained a brand new 1.0.2 iphone today.

Since i live in Germany, i can not use the phone without unlocking.
    My first question:

Is it possible to upgrade firmware 1.0.2 (out of the box iphone, not unlocked yet) to 1.1.1 and after that getting 100% of the functions to work? (even making calls? ;-))
If yes, which way would you recommend? And is it difficult to succeed?

And what does it mean to "jailbreak" an iphone? I couldn't find the word in a dictionary, maybe you can explain it to me. And whats the difference between unlocking, jailbreaking and activating?

    Thanks ahead,
    sh0x

    Arrow

Jailbreaking: break the iphones security for you to be able to load applications not bought to apple.

Unlocking: Breaking the iphones security for you to be able to use any SIM card, and not only the ATT ones.

Activation: All iphones need to be activated through itunes for using them, so with some methods you will find in this forum you will be able to bypass this step of your phone.

Now, my recommendation, if you are a newbie on this area, use an unlocking method for 1.0.2 that you can find in this forum and are much easier than upgrading to 1.1.1 and then jailbreaking, activating and unlocking.

    Regards,

    Default

    upgrading OTB 1.0.2 to 1.1.1

download 1.1.1 firmware (lots of references in forum)
put phone in restore mode (hold power+home, let reboot, until you see the apple+cable logo) [wrong : ignore please]
    run itunes
    hold shilft - click restore
    select firmware you just downloaded.

    now you have 1.1.1 phone.
http://jailbreakme.com or use CARNAVAL (jailbreak and Activate only)

    Use anySIM 1.1 to unlock

EDIT: sorry, this is how you go to 1.1.1

    Use the DFU method:
Connect the iPhone to computer with USB cable. Probably iTunes will start. [You can switch off iTunes if you want to]
The iphone must be switched ON. Don't switch it off (don't do the slide power off)
Hold down the Power and Home buttons until you hear the disconnect tone (that is the two tone sequence indicating that a USB device has disconnected).
Then release the power button and continue holding the home button until you hear a quick pair of connect and disconnect tones, then release the home button. Then start iTunes (if it wasn't running) it will detect an Iphone that needs to be restored. click OK.
Then Press Shift key on the computer while you click on restore. It will show you a window to select the firmware.
Select the 1.1.1 you downloaded before. Let it restore/upgrade.

and after restoring/upgrading to 1.1.1 with your described method.
is it possible to use just this http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13698 guide to get ALL functions of the iphone (including making calls) working properly??

if yes, i will start now ;-)

    that's nice instruction !!.
so far, the only thing you don't get is visual voicemail which requires AT&T service.
the appsnap method is cool but you may not get youtube, but there's a way to fix that.
