Default touchscreen doesnt work and endless reboots?

im using OSX to unlock the iphone i just purchased. i made it all the way to the final step of unlocking, i even had the unlock icon on my screen and things started to go a little strange on me. i saw the icon but i could not open it and then i realized that i couldnt use the touchscreen to access anything. i noticed a small lock on the top middle part of the screen and i dont recall that being there before. the phone then started to turn itself off and on repeatedly without being touched. i read some forums about endless reboot cycles and how to fix it but i couldnt manage to get them working. it sucks to have gotten this far and now the problems set in. i have been working on it for about 5 hours now and i cant get anywhere. i can get back to the "please connect to itunes screen" but thats about it. my itunes isnt even recognizing the iphone being plugged into it. i hope somebody here has some suggestions for a noob who is dying to get this bad boy up and running....and hopefully one who isnt carrying around a $400 brick! Thanks!

alright.....this is getting really strange. the rolling reboot stopped and the unlock icon was still there. i hit it and 15 seconds later it took me to the unlock process shown on modmyiphone.com . i used their site because i own a mac and they used numerous photos on their tutorial. so the 20 min process began and i got a sucess message. i turned the phone off and inserted my tmobile sim. upon rebooting i had 5 bars of coverage yet my screen was still messed up and reboots kept happening. has anyone seen anything like this? any fix ideas?

    choose .ipsw 1.02 file

    or

    whith phone on or off
hold sleep and home button about 30 sec
phone should come up with yellow triangle
    plug into computer
    Itunes will say restore
    hold option and click restore

ive tried that a few times. itunes tells me i cannot restore the iphone and gives me an error message. the issue may be that im not selecting the right file when i go in to get 1.0.2. the only option i have is selecting the zip file, the select button on the bottom right of the dialog box stats gray unless i select the zip file. can someone please give me a walthrough for the restore? im just not sure how to grab the file (the right file) because the only file i can grab into when i get to the point of holding option while clicking restore leaves me with an error message. i get the feeling this is really simple because every description i get is rather vague and im obviously missing something.

i changed the file name and deleted ".zip" and changed it to "ipsw" and it gave me the same error message. iphone could not perform restore (1). or something along those lines. the icon for the file turned into a white box with a music note but like i said, no change in the outcome.

ok....i downloaded the 1.0.2 firmware file from modmyiphone.com. on my desktop i now have a new folder labeled "iPhone1,1_1". within that folder there are a few items: 009-7698-4.dmg, 694-5298-5.dmg, a folder named firmware, kernelcache.release.s518900xrb, and restore. the firmware folder includes: all_flash and dfu.

when i get the yellow sign on my iphone that says "please connect to itunes" i plug in my USB and start itunes. i get the prompt to restore the phone on my computer and i hold option and click restore. the dialog box opens and the file i downloaded is there under the heading of desktop. when i click on iPhone1,1_1 it shows a new dialog box with all the files mentioned before. so i can go deeper into the file but i am not allowed to simply click on it and restore using that file. the box is grayed out rather than highlighted in blue.
