Default Is there a way to tell from S/N on iPhone Box what Firmware it's preloaded

I wanna purchase an iPhone and wanna unlock it.

If I go to the Apple store and purchase an iPhone, is there any way of telling what firmware will be loaded on it with out opening the box?

Or I have to open the box and if I goof up, and pay $40 restocking fee???

    Please help

    Thanks

Yeah its got to do with the serial number, its like the 4th digit in should say 38 or 37. Basically if the number set is higher than 39 you have 1.1.1

Actually greater than or equal to 39. I've actually seen some people post that some of the week 38 phones came with 1.1.1. Probably mid week software change. So disregard the first three numbers/letters and look at the next two.

My cousin had bought one like couple weeks ago, and his was 39, and his is ver. 1.0.2
I am going to Apple store now and see what ver they have, do they let you look at this info before you pay? I mean if it's more than 39 or 40 or something ... I am not going to pay... Not worth it now atleast...
