    Let's clarify the issue:

1 - The AT&T Sim card just enables you to activate and use your phone in US, with a contract of course.
2 - If you are out of US, the AT&T sim card will do nothing for you.
3 - So if you want to use your iPhone you have to jailbreak and unlock it.
4 - If your phone is 1.1.2 out-of-the-box, you can only jailbreak it, no unlock possible yet.
5 - The jailbroken phone can only be used as an iPod Touch. You cannot make calls or send SMS without unlocking it.
6 - Will you need the AT&T sim card for the jailbreak? NO.
7 - Can AT&T sim card do the jailbreak for you? NO.

Result : An AT&T sim card, out of US, has nothing to do for you. You have to jailbreak and this process is not related to your AT&T card.

    BTW ,
you can use the AT&T in only one case , if u had OOTB 1.1.2 phone and you need to use turbosim then you might need the AT&T to copy the ICCD and the IMSI values out of it to the turbosim
    1.1.2 OTB
    1.1.3 now
    Unlocked using ZIphone
