I just got an iPhone from an AT&T Store, and its a week 30 phone, so I guess that would be the best place to look, though if they are limiting them, then I guess you could try and say that your buying them as gifts....

How do you get them to tell you which week the phone is?

You raise an excellent point. How do you get AT&T to let you look at the box before purchasing. I guess you act like a dumass (not a far stretch in my case) and try to get them to show you the box. It might be obvious if you start looking at the code right away. I know that the AT&T store in Laredo, Texas does all of the paper work before handing the product over you. I'm planning to purchase 2 more next week and will try this strategy...

    1) Tell them that they are gifts and therefore I won't be signing up for any service now.
    2) Ask to see the product an 'look at the pretty picture' on the box before making a decision.
    3) Hope like hell they don't remember me from the last time I was in

If they look to be 1.1.1 I'll just change my mind and run.

    Wish me luck.

Code? What code? A product bar code? What should it be/not be?

Drove down to AT&T last night in Watertown NY. Explained to the lady I was from Canada and needed a phone from week 38 or less. I explained to her the serial numbers 4th and 5th didgits had to be 38 or less. She kindly brought one out with "38" on it and I asked if she had anything lower. She got a week 32 phone for me. This lady was EXTREMELY nice.

So I got home and unlocked it for my buddy on Rogers. I have bought 2 in the past week with no issues there. They have a tonne of 8G iPhones there.

I went to my local Apple store (The Falls mall, Miami, FL). I explained to one of the guys working there how the serial numbers work and whatnot. He knew I wanted them for unlocking and tried to tell me that:

    1) All the "old" phones (i.e. 1.02 firmware) were being sent back to Apple for updating. (Most certainly BS).

    2) Since they sell out of iPhones every day, it's not like they have any of the old ones in stock anyway. (Possible)

I think he was just being an asshole. I haven't seen anything from anyone else suggesting product is being shipped all the way back to Apple HQ for patching and then repackaging. That's ridiculous.

check your serial number on the box.... if the first five is like this 7R730
..it is week 30 if you see 38 still firmware 1.0.2 and can be unlock.

Anyone know for sure how AT&T know its the same person trying to buy more? Is it tied down to the name you give them or the credit card you use? I need to get some more phones but dont want to be embarassed/shamed at the store.
