If it is your wife's working iphone, I think you should not mess up her phone to fix your phone. You won't gain anything. You will end up having one phone working anyway.

I tried to collecting old stuff, but the thing is I don't have a bricked phone anymore. So I can't test anything.

The problem is that not every bricked phone has the same problem.

Itunes_control

the itunes _control shows :

nothing turns it on...

It seems that your phone was not jailbroken yet. That's why you can't access root system. You need to jailbreak it.

About the dead phone you mentioned, since it was damaged by water. I am not sure if the commboard is still fully functional. But you could give it a try.
If that commboard is working, you just need to replace your commboard with that commboard. Restore the firmware. Your iphone will be back to life.

Is there a way to flash the bootloader and baseband or fix the 1011 error without a hardware solution. I can't possibly crack the phone open.

Can't do it.

It depends on what kind of 1011 error you have.
Some of them can be fixed with software or the freezing method.
Some you have to use test point which is hardware.
And some you have to replace the commboard.

There are many threads about this 1011 error. You need to read them all and try them all.

About opening the iphone. It's actually not that hard.
You just need the right tool and method. I posted it somewhere in this thread.

wat should i use to jail break 1.1.1
i have used

ziphone(does not jail break even though the jailbreak option is selected)
iliberty ( just puts the phone in recovery mode and stops)
