Default Software Unlocking & The Law

Well i've read in many topics that it is 100% legal to unlock an iphone.

I recently brought a few, unlocked them and sold them as buy it now on ebay, i managed to sell 4 in the final day (today) and paypal rang me up, obviously with a lot of money flowing into my account they were a bit concerned. So i explained how i ship the items ect and he asked how i unlock it which is what made me suspicious. I said i use software, i dont use a sim.. he said he was familiar with the unlocking methods and stuff and he carried on to talk about if i was planning on selling them at the quantity i did for a long period of time or if it was just a short term thing. I told him that it was a short term thing but as they got a bit of money i may decide to sell a few more, i mainly sold a few today because i needed money for my holiday. He said he was going to make a few notes on my account to make sure i dont get a phone call everytime i sell a lot of iphones or something.

So i'm pretty sure it was purely because i sold a lot of them and they just wanted to tell me a few things about security and make some notes to make sure i dont get a call all the time...

But asking me about how many i have and how i unlocked them seemed a pretty irrelevant questions.. so im just being a bit paranoid now. Is it completely legal to unlock iphones then sell them on?

    Thanks in advance

In general unlocking your phone for personal use is generally legal . However i think you are probably on a grey area if you are seen to charge for the service.

Well technically im not being paid for the service. I don't charge people for unlocking it, it's more like a feature to the phone. People pay more because its unlocked but they don't directly pay me to unlock the phone.

it illegal to unlock and sell, but if they buy the phone then ask u to unlock it isnt. The only way its legal is for personal use. I am in law enforcement i know this from experience.

It depends on the laws of the country the iPhone was bought in.

The US laws states that it is absolutely legal to unlock a personal phone to use on a different network. It is NOT legal to sell them though.

You're asking opinions or trying to find excuse for yourself?
"I don't charge people for unlocking it" - of course you do. If you are trying to translate it for yourself to "cleaner" language, do so - but what's the point of asking for opinions?
Also note there is no "reselling" of the phone. The only official places where you can buy it are Apple stores and AT&T etc.. If you are selling them in massive quantities (more than 5), this already brings attention.

heres the difference alot of people dont know, and it's exactly what geohot mentioned on his first videos on cnn

UNLOCKING THE IPHONE IS PERFECTLY LEGAL, selling an unlocked iphone is ILLEGAL. Reverse Engineering in the engineers world is a big no-no, but i mean you gotta do what you gotta do right geohot? lol

Dont worry dude, just tell whomever that YOU personally unlocked your iphone and have no intentions of selling for profit lol there you go.

ahh just read your thread over... ya thats illegal lol peace

Shit, how come theres so many being sold on ebay then? I mean go on ebay, go on Mobile Phones then type iphones. Find me one iphone that doesn't say UNLOCKED on it. People sell loads of em.

As for piranha, no im not looking for an excuse at all. Technically i don't charge people for unlocking the iphone. I don't say BUY THIS IPHONE AND THEN GIVE ME AN EXTRA 10 TO UNLOCK IT. That would be charging people to unlock it, i however am selling an iphone which just so happens to be unlocked already.

Wouldn't paypal tell me that doing this is illegal? They never mentioned a thing about it, surely if i was doing something illegal which involved them and ebay they would explain it's illegal.

Just watched a geohot cnn interview where they ask if he did it to make money or whatever and he says no but he's selling the worlds 2nd unlocked iphone to some guy.

So thanks for the replys but if he can say on TV he's gunna sell an unlocked phone i sure as hell won't get into any trouble.

    Thanks again

Why would it be illegal to unlock for profit but not illegal to unlock for free?
