Default Risk in Downgrading the Baseband

I have been hearing conflicting reports on the risk involved in downgrading the baseband on virgin 1.1.1 iPhone's. Some people have been saying that even if you use ieraser successfully that you could do irreperable damage to the iPhones baseband.

Currently I have 3 virgin 1.1.1 iPhones, and what I would like to do is downgrade the firmware and the baseband to 1.02 so that they can be used as phones and ipods, however ive been hearing on IRC that doing this will bork the baseband permanently.

Can the community comment on this?

from my point of view there is no big risk.
I tried a lot, even downgrading de firmware... rebooted the phone.
I'm always able to restore the baseband...

I dont feel there is any risk, ive flashed the baseband at least over 50 times and no issues so there really an issue. Even people who put the wrong baseband files on, like using -e with an .fls file still can get the baseband to recover after clearing it and reflashing it.

If you downgrade bb to 1.0.2 and stay with 1.1.1 osx the iphone might not be stable. if you downgrade both bb and os to 1.0.2 i think it should be fine.

Interesting, this is good to hear especially coming from a senior member. People and admins on irc.osx86.hu #iphone have been saying otherwise.

After seeing this, i'm wondering if my downgrading to 1.0.2 from 1.1.1 with the AppTappInstaller.exe is downgrading the baseband also? And... what is the baseband and why does it need to be downgraded along with the firmware??? Sorry, i'm a newb

Downgrading using those tools DOES NOT downgrade the baseband, it will still be at version4 instead of 3.14 which is what 1.02 firmware was on. The baseband is basically a modem that makes the calls to the cell towers. It only needs to be downgraded fully to virginize the phone correctly. That requires using the new IPSF virginize concept or wait for the DevTeam's tool to come out to completely virginize it. Again you only need to virginize it if you used some type of unlock tool like anySim or iUnlock.

the truth is any thing using ieraser is dangerous as if you reset the phone after using ieraser or if it fails for some reason you cannot use bbupdater anymore. I have read several posts from people getting a 1011 error that is NOT fixable.

both virginizing methods and anysim 1.1 use ieraser and both have left people on the fourms with 1011 errors.

    USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!
