well mozzy gave me instructions on how to get o2 to work for internet, like an edge hack kind off. you can use internet on iphone which has o2 pay and go, just not through edge, hence it will be abit slower but better than nothing. pgilder gave the instructions before i think on how to go on the internet throgh o2 pay and go! i think the only one that wont work is youtube, but like safari n stocks n etc should work!
someone with good knowledge on this should confirm everything:

WITH AN IPHONE USING O2 PAY AND GO INTERNET, AFTER THE INSTRUCTION CHANGE ETC, CAN SAFARI AND ETC BE USED (except youtube)?

    Thank you

here are the instruction i was give with the actual files mentioned in the intructions, looks pretty easy:

    1) Upload the included files to the specified directories. Remember to take backups of the original files before overwriting, just in case you need to switch back.

    proxy.pac
    /var/root/

    preferences.plist
    /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

UnknownCarrier.plist (an existing version of this file may not exist on your phone. If this is the case, simply upload as a new file)
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/

    2) Restart your iPhone.

That's it! You should now be able to connect to the internet via GPRS (note that full EDGE speeds are unavailable for Pay & Go SIM cards).

    Enjoy!

YES, it will all work fine (i dont know about youtube, havent tried it)
a pay monthly sim is required for edge, but pay&go phones work with gprs
follow the instructions i gave, it should work (worked for me fine)
i can use safari, maps, weather and mail all fine on edge (i havent tried to others...)

    thanks

EDIT : desi, use pgilders instructions, they should work definately, for the files, im waiting for pgilder to confirm they will work and then i will link you to mozzy's thread with the files! actually i just checked and its says in the readme file with the instructions that its for 1.1.1, so im not definate if it will work on 1.1.2 versions. defo use pgilders, i will use them instead tomorow when i actually have my iphone!

my method worked fine for me, and someone else told me about it so i guess it worked for them
this is where i originally asked it: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4597178
no, it only connects to edge when required

basically, the files are originally set as if you were on an iphone contract
these settings are different compared to the 'normal' o2 settings
what my instructions do is change the iphone contract-only settings to normal o2 settings
the iphone contract settings only work if you have activated the iphone on an o2 iphone specific contract
    make sense? i hope so!

my instructions worked for 1.1.2, and i answered that second question above (no, it doesnt require you to turn grps off all the time)
DONT DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM FOR INSTALLER CALLED 'SERVICES' AND USE IT TO DISABLE EDGE. IT MESSED UP MY IPHONE EDGE SETTINGS (the rest of the services app, like the wifi and bluetooth parts worked fine)

    Default o2paygo settings GPRS

    taken from modmyiphone & macrumors

"After wading through the plethora of different O2 Edge settings, I finally got data working on my unlocked 1.1.1 iPhone with a Pay & Go SIM + 7.50 Web Bolt-On. It is important to remember that full EDGE speeds are only available for those with Pay Monthly or SIMplicity SIM cards, so Pay & Go customers will have to settle for GPRS speeds. Also, you will only be able to send and receive from an o2.co.uk email account via their email servers (mail.o2.co.uk + smtp.o2.co.uk).

Remember, the 7.50 Web Bolt-On is not required - you can still use data without it and the usage will be debited from your calltime balance. Pricey but maybe better for those who only plan to use the data apps over the cell network very occasionally.

UPDATE: I have now upgraded my unlocked US iPhone to 1.1.2 so I am now updating this guide to accommodate 1.0.2, 1.1.1 and 1.1.2. I am providing the files that I have used to make this setup as simple and painfree as possible!

This guide assumes you have a fully jailbroken iPhone with SSH/SFTP access. - Either a fully unlocked US model with the 1.0.2, 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 firmware, or a jailbroken UK model with 1.1.2.

    1) Download the appropriate zip file for your iPhone's firmware:
    1.0.2 or 1.1.1 - http://**********.com/files/71604085...hone_1.1.1.zip
    1.1.2 - http://**********.com/files/71604102...hone_1.1.2.zip

    2) Unzip the file and you will find the files you need to upload to your iPhone. Open the README.rtf which details the upload locations for each file. Remember to make backups for any file you overwrite as I cannot be responsible for anything going wrong (although this is pretty safe stuff!!)

    3) Restart your iPhone by fully turning it off and then back on again. Fire up Safari to check you have a connection. It may be slow but it's better than nothing and saving you the unnecessary monthly contract!"

I can confirm 100% that this works! I have tried, Weather, Stocks, Youtube All Work

host: iphone ip address (find in the wifi menu)
    user name: root
password: alpine (this is the default i think)
protocol: SFTP (secure file transfer protocol)
