As rudimentary as it may be...I also had issues when I signed up for tmob Edge service. Luckily for me, I just had to reboot the phone. It worked even after I had messed around with the preferences.plist file. I even copied that file over from someone elses's phone(to replace my corrupt file), and Edge still worked(after reboot). Sorry if you've already done it, thought I'd put it out there anyway.

I'm no expert on SIM cards/data plans, but using your friend's working AT&T SIM card in your iPhone (with AT&T GPRS/EDGE settings) may not result in a working GPRS/EDGE connection.

It's possible that AT&T looks at the IMEI of your phone (not just the SIM card) to decide whether/not to allow you onto their network. Again, I'm not an expert - that's just speculation.

I also signed up for T-mobile's $19.99 "Total internet" plan. I found that "internet2.voicestream.com" told me that I wasn't subscribed to EDGE. I also found that "wap.voicestream.com" seemed to just 'hang'. I eventually tried "internet3.voicestream.com" (supposedly just for their "VPN Internet" plan which costs $10 more), and it worked just fine.

I'd suggest you login to "my.t-mobile.com" and check your account to make sure they actually added "Total Internet" to your plan. I did the same, and sure enough, they apparently added the "VPN" version of the plan to my account. I haven't complained - I'll see what my bill looks like and complain if it isn't $19.99.

I'd also suggest doing a reboot of your iPhone after changing your EDGE settings. I didn't have to do this, but I could understand the possibility of your 'old' settings being remembered/causing problems until a reboot.

BTW, I did NOT have to change any 'proxy' settings/files - I only changed the settings under "Settings->General->Network->EDGE" (again: I used "internet3.voicestream.com" for APN, and left username/password blank).

I thought perhaps it was just my service so I got my friends SIM from his legit ATT Iphone, popped it into my phone and used the wap.cingular settings. Same thing just times out, no errors though. That has led me to believe that something is jacked up in a file somewhere on my system. I have made no changes to any of the files or even attempted to setup the proxy.pac solution. Anyone have any idea on what files I can restore to correct this problem, and where I can go about finding them?

    Thanks
Remove your SIM and reboot your phone, the original files will be reloaded.
Put your SIM back in, configure your phone for t-mobile edge.
Turn wireless off, wait for the "E" to appear.

VERIFY you are getting an edge IP address on the iPhone.
    (use terminal, or ssh, etc.)

Once you have an IP, test it out.
mail ALWAYS worked for me, but nothing else until I changed the preferences.plist to use a proxy server.
I am using the 5.99 t-zones plan though.

i had this same problem. there was an EDGE outage for everyone East of the Mississippi River. when i called in to find out about it they had to troubleshoot my blackberry (wasnt working with my iphone either) they said they had to re-send the service books to me and re-add me to the blackberry server. try a different t-mobile phone then call tech support, theyll do the rest.

    I am such an idoit.
I finally figured out what I did wrong. I signed up through t-mobile.com for Hotspot $19.99 add-on. Because my previous phone was a moto RAZR the Total internet plan with Hotspot ($19.99) was not shown as an option. I saw $19.99 and just assumed this was the total internet plan, it is not. I switched my phone on t-moible.com to the Wing and when I went back to Plans & Billings page, there Total Internet with Hotspot unchecked and Hotspot checked. I unchecked one and checked the other and submitted my order. 5 minutes later my EDGE was working (stocks, weather, mail, safari, etc.)

So long story short, you might want to check what phone t-mobile.com shows. Make sure it is one that can connect to the internet and you have the correct plan checked.
