Yesterday my friends attempted to purchase iPhones from an AT and T store in Bellingham. The service reps said they needed to show a valid US drivers license to prove they were Americans...which was a no go because they are Canadian. Instead, though, they drove directly to the Apple store in Lynwood (Alderwood mall) and there was no problem at all. So I guess AT and T will sell only to the American hackers...nice policy!

afaik, AT&T want you to activate in store, apple will sell to anyone... i walked into apple, produced UK id, to show it was my Visa card, and job done
AT&T doesn't want you to activate in store....since you have to use iTunes, it's pointless. They seal the bag so you can't even easily open it instore.
They are just hording the stock they have for legit (or the idea that they would be legit) US residents who would activate on AT&T.
The store in Bellingham is the closest retailer to Canadians on the west coast by over an hour drive....they probably have sold a ton that just flowed back up north. It's the same store I bought mine ;)
The Seattle area stores are great. The University store is quite nice, but busy. I'm curious if AT&T get anything from a straight sale.
Must be a new policy because I bought my iphone from the Bellingham AT&T with no problems. Just said it was a gift. Even got my $200 refund a few days latter and I am Canadian.
I also bought my iPhone from that exact store with no problem; even used my Canadian Visa AND got the appropriate refund. They were probably just being bitchy.
