I can confirm that the iPhone works like a charm in Costa Rica with the network operator ICE (the Costa Rica Institute of Electricity), which today holds a constitutional monopoly in the field.
Did the unlock with anySim following the Windows guide from http://www.hacktheiphone.com/

Even if here in Costa Rica we do not have EDGE, our data transfer goes through GPRS that is a slower version of EDGE, in fact, most of EDGE phones defaults to the slower GPRS when the reception is bad. I would try to input the ICE settings for data and cross fingers to see if it works.Quote:

Go to Setting, General and Network and edit your EDGE setting to:
APN. “icecelular" leave username and password and everything else blank.
Try it with a sim card that have the data plan activated.

I will have my iPhone next week and it would be great if it work with the ICE GPRS.

GPRS will work as long as you have the data plan activated on your account. it's, obviously dog slow, but it works. i guess it's fine if it's a real emergency (though i don't know why you'd really want to use it - just stumble on a wifi signal and join).
the only thing i don't have working yet is the VM notification. i haven't gotten around to checking how my VM settings are with ICE's servers, but it shouldn't be anything out of this world.

nice I'm going to try to set the GPRS on my iPhone (could be usefull as emergency connection as mechanus said)
NYCiPodDoctor, yeap the service is very cheap (price and quality lol)
it cost $5,57 per month with 60 minutes
and its aroung 4-5 cents per extra minute

I just received my iPhone today!
I'm glad to know that we already have several iPhone users in CR, that would really provide timely feedback and community sense.
I will be unlocking my new toy this next weekend (when I have enough time to focus on this task), I really don't think rush is the best approach on this sort of things. :p
I plan to follow the http://www.hacktheiphone.com/ guide, looks pretty straight forward.
Hopefully everything will go smooth, I'll keep you posted.
