Bootloader 4.6 or 3.9......Why oh Why

Everyone keeps going on about keeping the 4.6 Bootloader, WHY ? I know there is no process to upgrade it back from 3.9 but surely it is better to have a Bootloader you can revirginize your Iphone from in-case the next version of firmware from Apple actually lock all the patches down.

It must be better to have a backdoor than be on the latest Bootloader as they function in the same way and still have the latest firmware being able to load on them.

Can anyone show me a real valid reason to stay on 4.6 ?

There is always a risk in the downgrade process as the bootloader is the most critical part, some people aren't prepared to take this risk. If geohot's custom bootloader does materialize you can currently only load it on using 4.6. Those are the main two reasons.

neonkoala, I accept the risk part but that applies to most of what we do when we jailbreak or unlock the Iphone, I think that geohot is excellent for what he has done but I would be concerned about using his bootloader if it was totally new and self written. I have been flashing PsP's for a number of years now and the best way always seems to be to modify the manufacturer code to do what you want and not to rewrite it.

I have taken the plunge last night , down to 3.9 now and am pleased that all is well. I would seriously recommend anyone else to consider this route as the more time that passes the more Apple will think of the revenue that they are loosing and do something to screw us.

I downgraded too to 3.9 even though I was seriously tempted by the potential custom bootloader.

Just a note, the risk with downgrading the bootloader is a lot higher than that of jailbreaking or unlocking, you break the firmware while jailbreaking, restore, you break the baseband while unlocking, restore via DFU or revirginize, you break the bootloader, you're screwed without hardware modification. Being from the PSP scene you should know the only true way you can break your PSP at the moment is to screw up the IDstorage, I managed to do this once but luckily had a NAND backup!

but i noticed that... *you* didn't mention, as others do, main concern most people has: no custom BL or FW once you downgrade BL. may I argue that... ;)
