2G/1.1.1 -- Want to Upgrade, VERY nervous

I would like to prelude this post with the fact that I am a windows user, i don't have itunes on here or any other form of unlock/jailbreaking programs at this point.

I have a 2G iphone i had unlocked about 2 years ago and im running the 1.1.1 firmware. The phone always functioned well as a phone and because I bought it before it was available in Canada I really just wanted it for the conversation factor at the start. As long as it operated as a "phone" i saw no need to update and risk having it lock back up on me (I never even used it as a ipod, essentially just a phone with wifi).

I want to upgrade to the best available firmware but I'm not tech savvy in form and I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a tutorial that is specific to my needs that even someone like me can follow or give me a quick point by point lesson on how to do it.

I know at this point it will be like reading dr.suess to a child but if anyone is feeling charitable and can lend me a hand i would really appreciate it.

Do i have to dowload the older itunes? Does itunes give you the option of loading different firmwares or does it automatically load the newest one on your phone.

Once i sync the phone with itunes will it be locked from that point on? Will i lose my emulators and roms when i do this?

iTunes will allow you install different firmwares if you option or shift click on the restore button you will get the option to chose the ipsw file for the firmware you want to install.

I would advise that you use an older version of iTunes (7.5 or earlier) to do the first upgrade (to 1.1.4) then upgrade to iTunes 8.2 or later to do the upgrade to 2.x and then 3.x

These are not silly questions.

Yes, you will lose all the ROMs and emulators and other apps you have installed. It is of course possible to back these up with SSH or maybe even with a tool like diskaid.

The emulators will need to be updated as no 1.x apps work on 2.x or 3.x but the ROMs will still be fine.

Yes you will need to jailbreak and unlock again once you have restored to newer firmwares. This is not a problem as 2G phones can always be jailbroken and the unlock for 2.x and 3.x is permanant and will survive restores.

I would not be too worried about breaking the phone. It is hard to permanenly break 2G phones.

So going directly from 1.1.1 to 3.0 is not advised?

Can i use redsn0w to do each of these upgrades or do i need different programs?

OS 1.1.4 is the last version that included a baseband update for your phone. I think it is a good idea to upgrade to that first.

I have no idea if redsn0w will work on the 1.x firmwares, I do doubt it though.

I would advise using the tools that were designed around the time that these firmwares were originally released.

For 1.x there were many tools available. I liked iLiberty and pwnagetool but there are guides on iClarified for iPlus and ziphone

I really don't know if you need to go to 2.x before you upgrade to 3.1, I would recommend it as the safest option though.

Redsn0w only really supports jailbreaking 3.0 at the moment.

If you are on the mac and wanted to use only one program then it has to be pwnagetool as its supports making pwned firmwares for 1.1.4, 2.x and 3.x. You still need to download a few different versions of pwnagetool as they have dropped support for older firmwares along the way.

Plz dont even download ziphone.Due to the risks you re putting your iphone while using it,due to it based on stolen code from dev team,due to alternatives that do the job just fine,pick whatever reason you want,just stay away from it.

So i should..

#1 Download itunes 7.5
#2 Download Iliberty or Iplus
#3 Synch Iphone with Itunes and install 1.1.4
#4 Unlock and Jailbreak using either program
#5 Download Itunes 8.2
#6 Download redsn0w
#7 Synch Iphone iwth Itunes 8.2 and install FW 3.0
#8 Unlock and Jailbreak with redsn0w

Please fill in any missing steps or things i should know...

Iphone running 1.1.1 firmware can go directly to 3.0 without any problems.
Redsn0w supports firmware 3.0 on iphone 2g (first generation iphone).

Run redsnow, select jailbreak, activate and unlock - Don't select Icy, just Cydia. Follow the instructions on the screen and make sure you are ready to push power and home button like it says on the screen. Just follow exactly.

Redsnow will begin to jailbreak. Once done, the phone will restart and bootneuter will run automatically to begin neutering the bootloader and patching the baseband (unlock).

DO NOT interrupt bootneuter while it is running, just let it run and wait.

It is best to go into settings, general and set auto-lock = never before you run redsnow. You can change it back when everything is completed.

I don't remember the exact steps & selection for using redsnow. If you are nervous, I suggest you go to iclarified.com and look up tutorial for using redsnow on iphone 2G. That way you know what to do and what is expected of you.

Do the upgrade to 3.0 for now. Keep it simple.
After that you can ask questions about 3.1 and pwnagetool and what to do.

- Itunes 8.2 is fine.
- get firmware 3.0 for iphone 2G
- get redsn0w

You don't need to go to 1.1.4 or 2.x to get to 3.0

fimware 1.1.4 contains baseband 04.04.05_G
firmware 2.0 through 3.x contain baseband 04.05.04_G

What does the upgrade to 3.0.1 do for me?

Also, how can i put music on this phone without re-locking it. as soon as i open itunes it wants to synch and i know that'll end in a lockup. Is there anyway around this, cause not that my zune is dead i need some music for the subway!!
