You should not need to do anything about the unlock before upgrading to 3.0
Once you have verified unlock, wifi and general functionality with 3.0 you can definitely upgrade to 3.1.2 it has some more fixes and a lot more of the hacks to enable features that Apple deliberately did not turn on for 2G iPhones (Stereo bluetooth, tethering over usb and bluetooth) exist only for 3.1.2

Well thank you for all the help, I successfully completed the unlock for 3.0 a few minutes ago and wifi and Edge seem to be working fine on Telenor. I installed the backup from the phone and have all the contacts/settings and everything back on there, just couldn't save the music (mainly since I didn't even realize she had so much before I started it -- oh well music is easy to get).

So she doesn't really have a need as far as I know to upgrade to 3.0, but I'm fairly sure that now since the phone is unlocked with redsn0w the phone can just be upgraded normally to 3.1.2 in itunes? Or do I have to re unlock it then?

Aside from any security differences between 3.0 and 3.1.2 that might exist, I don't think she will need 3.1.2. I am however looking to get MMS going again for her, as I guess SwirlyMMS was installed before but I'm looking into something called ActiveMMS2G right now, but I can only find articles in it it is not showing up in Cydia...

You are correct, you do not lose your unlock when restoring or upgrading to 3.1.x but you will most probably lose your hacktivation. You will be stuck with a connect to iTunes screen unless you are able to activate legitimately (ie you have an AT&T sim card floating around). The activation alllows all the iPodTouch functionality (everything except the phone). The unlock allows the iPhone to logon to a network with any sim card.

It is not recommended to upgrade jailbroken iPhones via iTunes, it is better to restore them (wiping all content on iPhone in the process). This is because some of the data installed by jailbroken apps (and Cydia) gets orphaned during the upgrade process and takes up valuable space, also potentially causes reliability problems.

The big items for 3.1.x are the better app management and the improved genius features. These only work with iTunes 9 and higher.

There were some serious SMS security flaws fixed (partly in 3.0.1 and fully in 3.1). As I said earlier, no one is hacking features onto the 2G for older OS versions anymore. If she wants the 2G to do tethering or have better bluetooth support, she will need to upgrade to 3.1.2

I would not bother with Swirly MMS. Native MMS support is available via hack for 3.0 and for 3.1.2

I just got the MMS working, I was having some issues as the ActivateMMS2G repo is no longer available by default, and I had to add the sinfuliphonerepo to get it going. So now everything works fine, with the inclusion/addition of native MMS support.

She really doesn't use the phone for anything but MMS, email, telephone, internet, and address book, and since all those features are now fully working I think I will hold off on the 3.1.2 upgrade.

For the 3.1.2 upgrade, I am assuming the same process would be done where I backup the phone, download the 3.1.2 firmware, then a similar install process as before? We don't have an At&t sim card so if she is going to lose the iPod functionality I will wait.

Think you misunderstood what I was saying.. You can still hacktivate after restoring to 3.1.2 (using blackra1n) and you will get most functionality (including iPod)

Hmm alright, well think she will wait for now since the problems she had before went away and dont want to have to tell her I need to try something else after giving her back a working phone. What I think I will look into now is getting a 2G for myself since it does everything I want and jailbreaking was real easy after everything is said and done.
