Potential of homebrewed firmware?
You see it with video card drivers and the like somewhat often. I'm confidant the team will get a solution together, but in the face of this not working, does anyone forsee a future where theres some non-Apple related updates to firmware based solely on 1.02?
Honestly this prospect doesn't seem that bad as an alternative, possibly even more advantageous to development communities.
Tell me if I'm missing something in regards to this idea though.

it sounds good but would obviouslly be very difficult maybe in a year or so

this sounds like my only option to fix the negative black screen i have, i cant say much about it other than i know i have it, but tilting it a very small amount makes it fine ( if i was paying on a 2 year contract this would bother me, but for now its fine)
hopefully an unlock will come for 1.1.1 but who knows by then 1.2 or whatever they will call it might be out. sounds like the cat and mouse game they were talking about has begun, hopefully after AT&T and apple part ways things can go back to normal.
I think apple intentionally released the iphone so it could be unlocked easily and even gave us fair warning basically not to update. but obviously they cant come right out and say it.

I don't think Apple expected the unlock to happen so quickly or so much fervor for an unlock.
That said, I think that 1.02 if there isn't a cracked solution to the current firmware and beyond could become the defacto standard for anyone who wants a more useable device. No iTunes store, but I dont like buying digital music anyway.
