Ok, heres the deal, I have a 1.1.2 FW with 4.6 BL, week 47 phone. I have two quick questions. I just got into the whole iphone thing (because i hated apple for a while) and I have been reading thread from other websites, so here are my questions....

1) What is the quick answer to the difference between unlocking and modding/just adding 3rd party apps

2) I read somewhere that unlocking is allowing another sim card to be used other that one from AT&T. Well, I just want to add 3rd party apps. and still keep my AT&T sim/account. Can I just downgrade to 1.1.1, jailbreak the phone, upgrade back to 1.1.2, jailbreak again with the 1.1.2 jailbreak and have apps. that will allow me to change icons and add a pic behind the icons and change my recharging battery screen while still having complete phone function with AT&T?

I think you are right on the money with your second point.

Jailbreak - Lets you put files, install 3rd party apps.
Activation - If you dont have AT&T Account, you will also have to bypass the activation using a fake activation.
Unlock- Is the procedure that lets you use any SIM card you want with the iPhone.

Yes, with your phone, you can install 3rd party apps.
Here's what you gotta do:
1-Downgrade to 1.1.1
2-Jailbreak and install OktoPrep
3-Upgrade (Do not press Restore) to 1.1.2
4-Activate using your AT&T account.
5-Jailbreak
6-You will now see the Installer Icon in your phone, go on ans install everything you want !

Yeah, you are right. Everyone (including me) is waiting for a unlock for the phones that came with the new bootloader.
