Im on a mac, i followed independences steps, got it from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 but when i click activate or jail break i get "Error, couldn't perform jailbreak. You need to downgrade to version 1.0.2, then perform the special upgrade to 1.1.1 (see Help documentation for more details)."
But i did use the method given,
now when i try to downgrade using their method, i get smoothly up tot he point where it says i should get a yellow triangle on my screen and it doesnt exit recovery mode and stays 1.1.1

Open the help file and read the instructions... think about it slowly then read the instructions again...
Basically i think your missing a step. this is how it should have gone for you..
Upgrade from 1.02 to 1.1.1 (not restore)
Downgrade back to 1.02 (but you also have a prepare step in here, read the instructions)
At 1.02 you now need to upgrade (again not restore) back to 1.1.1
its all pretty simple, dont skip steps, read the help file thoroughly and do a walkthrough in you head as you go along....

downgrade like this
First, download the iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw from Apple. Then connect phone to dock, and hold down home button and power button for about 10 seconds until phone turns off. Now release the power button but continue holding the home button. After about 10 seconds the computer will detect the iphone in restore mode, and itunes should tell that the phone needs to be restored. Hold down SHIFT key (Windows) or ALT-key (Mac) when clicking the Restore button, and select the file you downloaded previously. Let the restore complete and ignore the error at the end. Now your phone should show a rectangle, but don't worry about it. Run AppTap to jailbreak your phone - it will fix it even though you get errors. When you are at the activation screen, you can start the unlock like normal.
then reflash the baseband back to 3.0 like this

your phone seems fine just follow a few guides
good luck
