10 out of 10 for effort shame you can't continue that effort with the 'search' tool.

Not quite sure what you are expecting hanging around the shop for? Are you expecting some kind of 'Doc Brown'-esk invention that they drag out and zap with 1.21 gigawatts?

This is a rhetorical question do not answer.

Can someone close this thread now please!

The official unlock method is known.

The shop sends your iPhone IMEI to Apple and they ask you to wait 1 or 2 days before connecting it to iTunes.

Then iTunes will identify your iPhone in the Apple unlocked database and will send an unlocked software update through an encrypted scheme.

It has been said several times around, when you buy the iPhone is it locked, well all iPhone in the market are locked.

I work for Vodafone Global and have been tasked this weekend with getting 4 unlocked iPhones to bring to germany for testing.

I will report how this goes.

I already have an unlocked iphone but on a monthly plan, as I live in France.

When I try to buy the phones, I am going to present my Irish passport to see if that flies and not disclose my French address.

Interesting that Vodafone want iphones for testing portal software.

Didn't Apple give any iPhone's to Vodafone when they were trying to sell them the odd 100,000 or so? I am amazed that they 1. need to send you out to buy a couple and 2. that you think that you wont get sacked for posting this on the internet.

Vodafone is huge. The portal people rarely talk to the handset people. You would not believe how hard it is to get handsets to test software.

Buying a handset is no trade secret. We just want to develop style sheets that work with the iPhone and Vodafone Live.

I doubt anyone from Vodafone reads this site!

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to share my experience as I am on business trip in France. I bought 649 EUR Iphone with prepaid Orange Mobicarte for 100 EUR (you will get 50 EUR as a bonus).
I showed them my foreign ID and paid with my non french credit card but had to give them my friend's french postal adress. Then they asked me to call Orange hotline. Operator verified my name, date of birth, Iphone's IMEI number and french address. After that they charged me 100 EUR off the credit.
They said a letter will arrive to my postal address in 10 days and after I have to wait additional 24/48 hours to get connected to Itunes to unblock the phone.
Currently I have the Iphone activated for calling using Orange Mobicarte through Itunes 7.5. No french itunes account was needed for this to be done.

Does anyone have similar experience bying officially unlocked phone ? How long does this take to get it done ? What should I exect from the letter they will send by post ?

Some people get these letters sent to the Orange retailer instead. Don't know if they've clamped down on this procedure however. The letter will take about a week.
