While I do not have an unlocked French iPhone sitting next to me, but from what I've gathered from the Apple support forums, NO. Essentially you need to 'activate' the phone just like normal via iTunes once it's out of the box or when you upgrade or restore its software. During the 'activation' it will also unlock the phone.

After that it is done, and it's just like any other iPhone in terms of iTunes (plug it in and sync, no iTunes account needed). However it may say 'trouble accessing the iTunes store, etc', though this won't cause any issues. It checks iTunes when syncing due to the iTunes store application on the phone. Before the iPhone came to the UK officially, if I was logged into my UK iTunes account when syncing, iTunes would say "trouble accessing iTunes Store". You hit okay and there's no worries. I don't think it gave this notice when not logged into an iTunes account, so maybe to be safe just log out before syncing.

Thus once it's unlocked and activated it remains as such without any further issues with iTunes. Though if you ever need to restore the phone or upgrade it in the future you will once again need to properly reactivate and unlock with the iTunes account originally used. Therefore be very careful with the software on the phone so as to avoid the need to restore and keep very good relations with this friend.

I hope everything works out well for you. Also consider looking through this forum to gather the correct information that may be needed to have the phone function correctly in your country and on your carrier. I'm speaking particularly about the AppSupport file and creating a .plist file for your carrier and Symlinking it. Cheers.

For what it is worth... I have just spoken to Apple Support France and they told me that in order to use an Orange FR unlocked iPhone you need a French iTunes account to activate... that's what they said, they might have got it wrong and some other support person might well say something else but that is what they told me less than five minutes ago.

This sounds about right (coincides with what is reported on the Apple forums).

Ok, first of all I'm a Belgian, and I don't own a french id. I bought an iPhone in France upon release last wednesday evening. I immediately started to try to unlock it official through the orange service. This is my story

    1. Get a NUDE iPhone (with a mobicarte) from the Orange shop for 650 euro, you do need an id but not an french one. The salesperson needs to put a French address in the computer to register the sale, but if you are a foreigner they probably just take the address of the shop itself (that's what they did for me and 2 of my friends)
    2. Buy a card off 100 euro to recharge your mobicarte, because Orange will credit your call credit on the card to unlock your phone (that's the only way of paying for it)
    3. Call the Orange support line, let them start up the process for unlocking your phone
    4. They send a letter with a code or something to the address which the shop attendant added during the sale. In my case the shop in France. (I'm currently waiting for that letter to arrive at the shop, so that I can go and fetch it)
    5. Once the letter arrives, you need to enter the code in iTunes
    6. Apparently wait another 48 hours for your iPhone to get unlocked...

I took me some more calls to the support line in between to figure out the recharge card stuff because the shop attendants have NO clue about how the procedure works...

I'll give you guys an update once I got the phone unlocked, hopefully by next weekend..

Just buy a French iTunes card from wherever they sell them!

Then you don't need a french credit card - you access french itunes click on redeem and enter the code - no card required - although perhaps the address you enter will have to match what you told orange!
