Default noob question about unlocking process

I've never hacked/unlocked the phone so please bear with me...

I've been reading several guides on how to do the above and I'm not exactly sure when in the process I need to switch my activated SIM with a new SIM. Is it before running AnySIM?

Here's the situation: I live in US (w/ US locked phone 1.1.1 FW) but would like to be able to unlock it so that I can use it during my upcoming overseas trip w/ a SIM from a local carrier in that country. Of course, I do not have the SIM with me yet. I was hoping I could unlock the phone here in US and once I get there I simply switch the SIMs and done. Isn't that possible? Or do I need the new SIM in order to unlock it? If this is the case, can the phone be jailbroken with my current SIM and then once I get there I can switch the SIMs and run AnySIM? Just trying to figure out how the process goes...

One more thing... If use the iWorld app once there, I assume the phone wont work in US when I get back and put in my US SIM, is that the case? So I'd need to do a restore?

Thanks n350ziphone. So can anySIM be run with my current AT&T SIM?

The app (anySIM) warns "please make sure your new SIM is in your phone"... I guess before running? Is this really needed or can I unlock with the ATT SIM so that I can use another SIM later?

To unlock 1.1.1 is quite easy using the AppSnapp method via wifi.
AppSnapp with make your iPhone ready to run 3rd party programs.
anySIM 1.1 is a 3rd party program that can be used after this so called jailbreak to unlock the iPhone.
There's no need to run anySIM with the SIM that you are actually going to use. Any active SIM will do the job.
After that the iPhone will just, well, accept any SIM

Just make sure you don't update your iPhone to a higher firmware version while abroad, that will undo the SIM unlock.
