If you are using the AT&T plan, you don't need neither to unlock or activate it with hacks.

Jailbreak is the method that let you install third party apps.

if you update your firmware your phone will be locked again. Dont upgrade the firmware unless you know how to unlock it again and and have experience with it. And people in posts above have already answered your question several times.

Depending on the condition of your phone, I'm sure someone is willing to trade you a locked phone for yours, especially the ones with otb 1.1.2.

Lol, so, simply connecting to iTunes will NOT brick your phone. If you are now on 1.0.2 you should be able to upgrade, if that is what you would like to do, to 1.1.1 and/or to 1.1.2 but that will lock your phone again as if you would have newly purchassed it. And you concequently will have to activate & unlock it again ( jailbrake & anysim ) you are abviously able to use ANY sim you'd like, going from at&t to orange, t-mobile whatever... it doesn't matter, and using at&t will NOT brick your phone.. there is no reason why it should...

    grtz

edit: PS: as for now, when 1.1.3 will come out, you're obviously not supposed to upgrade to 1.1.3 untill there is a complete way to jailbrake it and activate it. So if you want to upgrade so badly, 1.1.2 is as far as you should go for now, and for the comming few months

And for using AT&T, if you have signed a contract with AT&T when buying the iPhone, or when connecting it for the first time with iTunes... you have no worries at all, and shouldn't even be asking questions about this on this forum... You can happily run through all the fw-upgrades just as you like...

i never signed any contract nor did i even buy the phone from att. someone else bought it and used it on t-mobile, then gave it to me. so you are saying, while having my att sim in the iphone (even though it is unlocked) i can connect it right now to itunes (the latest version of itunes) and upgrade the firmware to 1.1.2 and be fine? please tell me that its not THAT simple, i feel stupid.
