NEW POLICY Can't buy iPhone with cash anymore

Just got back from the apple store, apparently we can't buy iPhones with cash anymore... is this legal? I didn't want to make a scene so I just agreed and left. Is there anything I can say?

Going to be the same in the UK, heres an extract from the carphone warehouse site!

Eligibility
Once you've got your iPhone, the next thing to do is activate it. This couldn't be simpler. All you have to do is enter into an 18 month Pay Monthly contract with O2 on one of our exclusive iPhone tariffs. These start at just £35 per month.
You need to be over 18, pass a credit check and have a bank account for the monthly direct debits. If you already have an iTunes account, perfect. If you have to create one, you'll need a debit or credit card. And an email address you access regularly because billing is online only.

You sign up for your Pay Monthly tariff and contract as part of the activation process so just make sure that you have this information to hand when you are ready to activate your iPhone.

To give everyone a chance, there'll be a limit of two iPhones per customer in-store and online. Oh, and we're afraid we can't accept cash.

hehe...use a cashier check or money order.. or go and buy a giftcard for $xxx.xx and use the giftcard.

I didn't realize it was so expensive...But I don't know how they got hold of phones even before official release in UK.

I Just calld they apple Store in Syracuse and asked about this policy becasue I am about to come from Canada and buy a computer and an Iphone in cash and they said its no problem. the policy was to stop people from buying a bunch of Iphone in cash and then reselling them
