Just bought an Iphone
I bought an iphone off a friend who bought two. The phone is unlocked and I have At&t. I want to register my phone and use it with all it's features. I called At&t and they said I will need to do that through itunes. I'm afraide if my phone will go through itunes it will lock. Has anyone tried it before or do they know how to do it without locking it. I don't mind if it locks from being unlocked but I do want to use it with my sim card which is At&t.
Just say NO to the update. (In the Mac version of iTunes you can actually turn off the request so you have to manually look for an update)You're never forced to do a firmware update in iTunes.
Using it with your own SIM card may or may not work. People have reported AT&T resetting their plans and discounts when they discovered the sim differences. You can do it by using one of the jailbreaking apps and an activator but you won't have all the features of AT&T. Only way to get Visual VM is on an iPhone data plan
Go to AT&T and get a new, fresh, unactivated SIM card. Explain what you want to do (leaving out the unlocked part of course) so they give you the right type of card. (A lot of the AT&T agents want to give you already activated SIMs and that screws up the iTunes process)
Put the new (clean) SIM in the phone and connect it to iTunes. Go through the activation provess - it will ask you if you're an exisiting customer, and adding a new line or converting an existing number. Give the last 4 of your SSN and billing zip to verify you, pick your SMS options and agree to all the contracts.
You set up an Apple ID (if you dont have one yet) and you're gtg. It will go through a few screens while AT&T activates it but you'll have a working phone in no time.
if there are any problems (generally caused by the AT&T agent giving you the wrong type of SIM) just call them and they'll get it fixed.
I reactivated my unlocked phone a few times and the process went smoothly each time.
Only thing that bricked my unlocked phone was 1.1.1
