Exclamation iTunes won't recognize iPhone recovery mode

    Hi everyone,
I have tried getting iiTunes to recognize recovery mode about a million times without success. What happens is, the iphone does go into recovery mode when I hold the buttons down, but all that happens in iTunes is it connects to the iTunes store and tries to get me to activate the iphone. No matter what I do - cancel, continue etc., the activate itunes screen never goes away and it never recognises that the iphone is in recovery mode. I'm running 1.1.2 otb trying to downgrade to 1.1.1

    Help!

I suffered the same problem as you said. I now have my first ever iPhone stuck in recovery mode. Short story coming please be patient.

When I got in from work last night I hooked it up to my iMac as usual and it prompted me for an update to 4.0.1 so as usual I just said yes because i have never had an issue before and shortly after the backup started it flashed up an error saying unable to update error code 21. Now every time i reconnect the iPhone it recognizes that it has to recover but does the exact same thing when it try's to do the restore. Bing!!! Error code 21. Please excuse my frustration.

I have tried most of the solutions the support page has suggested (open ports on my router, reboot mac, remove all other USB's and try another USB port) all except reinstalling iTunes because I did not have time to do that last night.

Please note I have never had an issue with my new iMac or my 2 month old iPhone and I don't have any other hardware I connect my iPhone to.

I was hoping some one may be able to offer me further assistance or advice before i go down the line of contacting Apple Support direct.

Here is what i found re:

    Error 21

*Custom firmware restore fail (PwnageTool since 4.1).
You have to put your device into the DFU mode and not into recovery mode.
Device won't boot correctly an stuck at the Apple logo after the error.

*Press and hold power and home button until it reboots.

*Error when using Sauriks server for a restore with iOS 5.x in the recovery mode at least on a A5 device.

*This error can also happen when you try to restore an iPod with hardware dfu. Use iREB r5 to solve this.

*You are trying to update to a beta firmware without UDID activation.

Warning DO NOT USE ON X64 bit Windows
Try RecBoot - A utility which allows the user, you, to kick the connected device(s) into and out of recovery mode.
