Good advice but changing the standard root password from "dottie" to something more sophisticated like "sH24Sfs34ee0w2h37z3" wouldn't hurt either.
Another good thing is to turn SSH off while using the iPhone on a daily basis, this can be easily done using the System.app because in a second, you can turn on SSH back.

    Default Resetting iPhone

The only way to avoid such problems is to ensure you have a clean system that runs iTunes, and then resetting the iPhone. To reset the iPhone, turn it on, then Press the HOME and power keys ttogether until the red bar appears and disappears (ab out 10 seconds). Don't do it longer than 10 seconds. Press power and start up as usual.
The reason why you get this error code is because your system is not a prim and proper Windows XP system (the iPhone works at your friend's place, right?). Fix your system and then your iPhone will work fine. You can also de-install and re-install iTunes.
    Best of luck,
    Peter

Default DO NOT CHANGE iPHONE PASSWORD

    All,
there is no point changing th iPhone password from dottie to something else. The issue is not the password but the user. The only user in the iPhone, the root user in a UNIX system has power to delete anyfile, like the administrator in a Windows system. JUST DONT DELETE AND MESS UP THE IPHONE FILES IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Always follow instructions from people that know, else you will have a $499 paperweight.

so i've restored my iPhone and unlocked it but i still run into the same issues.
Petervee's suggestion of fixing my xp might be valid.
I really don't want to get to the scenario of reinstalling win xp. can anyone help?
My iPod video and Shuffle still work on my home pc. Just not my bloody iPhone. I can still only sync my Iphone with my PC during the morning and on a full charge. Sometimes, the iPhone partially syncs but then quickly loses the connection. Has anyone run into this? Any possible fixes?

My itunes at work syncs all the time... my itunes at home only syncs in the morning with full charge ... usually I have to restart my apple mobile device and / or ipod svs (i have a pc w/ xp sp2 running itunes 7.3.xxxx, Free sw unlock method) before it works at home. As well, sometimes i also have to delete my \lockdown *.plist file on my home pc.

I use my work itunes to sync with calendar and contacts and my home pc to sync with music/podcasts/ photos/video. does that make a difference?

Is a full restore in order? it's pretty dicey now that 1.1.1 is out. I've taken a peak in the forums but couldn't find a solution (other than a full restore).

Please let me know if there's an easier way!!!!
