Iphone sim / unlocking questions
Ok so I bought an iPhone online, it says it was unlocked (but I'm not sure it actually is..). (running 1.1.1)
If no sim card is in the iphone I can use all the features of the home menu (that I've tried, didn't try SMS for obvious reasons), I can surf the web, use Youtube, etc..
If I plug a sim card (my current cell phone's, I don't have the blank one that came with it) in while I'm in that home menu it says "Different SIM detected, Please connect to iTunes" with a dismiss button. When I hit the button everything stays the same as if there was no sim card. If I try to make a call it fails.
If I power on the iPhone with the sim card in then I get the Activate screen, with my current background picture showing (I changed the backgrounds to test this), and the slide for emergency bar at the bottom. If I don't press anything the screen turns off in like 15 - 30 secs. If I plug into Itunes it wants me to update and activate.
If I remove the sim card while its at the above screen it goes to a screen with the time and date at the top, current background, and slide to unlock at the bottom (takes me to home).
So is this normal for a Locked iPhone?
Also when I type in #301# on emergency dial it just says please wait for a second then disappears and puts me back on the keypad, dialing 0 immediatly after that just gives me call failed. It doesn't ring during any of that either.
If this is normal, is there a way to be 100% sure my phone is a normal locked one? I don't want to try to unlock it and it brick if its been tampered with.
If this isn't normal, how can I get my Current Sim card to work on the iphone without activating via AT&T?
My current phone is under cingular, now owned by AT&T, but I don't want to pay 20$ more a month for features I won't use. (to activate they make you add a data plan on top of my current voice plan)
Thanks ahead of time for reading and trying to help.

OK I figured out what I was doing wrong with the *#307# method (wasn't dailing the star, oops).
I did the jailbreaking method, after I installed the App program, it restarted, I turned the phone back on, it went straight to the spring board, bypassing the Slide to unlock, I rebooted a few times, and it did the same thing, so I didn't think much of it. I installed AnySim 1.1, but when I went back into the springboard so I could open it, it kicked me out to the activate screen in about 2 - 3 secs. Now I'm back to where I was as if I didn't jailbreak. If I remove my sim card I can still get into the springboard and see that anysim did actually install, but if my sim card is plugged in I cannot even get that far.
Should I restore my 1.1.1 Firmware? or should I jailbreak again? (even though the app program is still installed and working) or risk it and run anysim 1.1?
