iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 *will* lock us out.
I don't know if you guys are following the "We need to talk." thread anymore. Just a heads up that I received confirmation from Jobs himself that the next iPhone firmware update is definitely going to make every effort to keep us from installing 3rd party apps. We're talking at least as difficult, if not more difficult, than hacking the iPod touch. IIRC, the loopholes we used are easily closed anyway, right? Still it sucks that Apple has decided to come down on us when we're not doing anything wrong. To give you even more good news, Jobs also said that security concerns are currently the top issue in their development of the real SDK, but there are "no clear answers in sight". One could be optimistic, and say it's great that they're actually working on a real SDK, or one could be realistic, and realize that that's just a fancy way of saying, "Leave me the hell alone, you'll get what you want if and when I want to give it to you"

I find the official information very noteworthy since we were trying to speculate about firmware quite for a while...
I'll have to think whether to return the phone... still have 20 days. But, well, it's gonna continue to be a cool phone with lots of ineteresting apps even without 1.1.1. And if it will be one of the few unlocked iPhones... I'll have something to brawl about

Just don't update it to 1.1.1 . You can always purchase music through iTunes on the desktop, have a few extra clicks to control ipod while it's playing, have the community write an app for video output, etc.

Sure, that's exactly what I mean. However, there will be three points to know in advance:
(1) There will be not so many people with unlocked iPhones, so there will be less apps
(2) There could be viruses bases on 1.0.2 flaws.
(3) I will be effectively without warranty, since if I try to use, I'll be locked back

If the Dev. team can hack 1.0.2 and below, I don't see why they cannot hack 1.1.1.
