Default How to upgrade jailbroken 1.0.2 to 3.x

I bought the iphone in 2007 and jailbroke it with 1.0.2 running

Since then I have not had time to keep up with options to upgrade to newer versions. But the time is now.

With 1.0.2 sometime during the last 2 years, apps store stopped working (crashing), I tried installing cydia last year through ssh but could not get cydia to launch as well (crashed).

A friend just pointed out that I could try a new method using DFU mode and slip in a newer version 3.x The steps seem to be too simple but I want to tread carefully. have no ideas of pros and cons of this approach.

I am now relying on the community here to bring me upto speed on the best options to accomplish moving 3.x and get app installers to work without risking bricking of the phone.

If you are still on 1.0.2 you do need to tread carefully - if you ever have unlocked your iPhone. Jailbreaking is not a problem but if you have ever run anysim to unlock your 1.0.2 iPhone you need to do some extra steps to reverse the unlock before you can upgrade.
