How long do you think it takes?
Hey all,
i'm following this forum for a little while now.
I was wondering ( like most of us ) when there should be a hack for the fw1.1.1 version ( out of the box ).
I don't want to hurry yuu guys, i do believe it's a lot of work, but is there already a light shining, or .. did Apple made it to hard to hack?
Good luck guys!
Thank you for everything!

Seems it will take about as long or a little quicker than when the iphone was released until it was unlocked.
And when that happens, it will be 1 week of "Yeah!" then it will be "Gah! I flashed 1.1.2. How do I activate my iphone now?" :p

I'm a little bit more on the pessimistic side. I think it will take a loong time.
Reasons:
- 1.1.1 introduced hardware decryption of relevant firmware files
- The iPhone's CPU has a non executable stack (which makes the exploiting of buffer overflows a lot more complicated)
If the information in the dev wiki is all that there is then we are virtually nowhere in the process.

maybe in a months time the unlock for 1.1.1 will come out

I think absent some back door hack like a buffer overflow everyone is being far too optimistic here. The firmware is signed and encrypted using AES-128 bit encryption which cannot be brute force hacked within any reasonable period of time given current hardware limitations.
The most likely hack still appears to be a baseband downgrade back to 1.02 but again there are no guarantees and I'm sure the Dev Team themselves couldn't give you an ETA.
It'll be done when it's done

Well if someone would be able to give us a timeframe for that, it would indicate that there was some concept of how to do it in the first place.
You can never give out a timeframe for something you don't know how to achieve.
Indeed... it will be done when it's done is the most accurate one could give.
In this case, there will be some milestones (see the stairway on the wiki) that the dev team has to pass without being able to give an indication because they don't know what they're facing yet. So we could be waiting for months, weeks, days or maybe just hours.
Once someone see's the light, it's done. And you'll find it on the wiki's frontpage for sure.

Yea u r right but, we r all waiting for it, Dev Team is working on it. So i hope they could at least give us a time, We r all impatient u know
Anyway We believe in Them...
I hope they could fix as soon as possible...

If that's one of the issues why not consider the use of a distributed network (as http://www.distributed.net/) to decrypt ? I bet a lot of iPhone owners would be ready to give their processor's idle time to help the Dev Team.
I would for sure and i have a few 8core macpro at disposal

I had the same idea yesterday, why not?
