More than 24 hours have passed since I got the unlocked iPhone and the unlock hasn't been activated yet, I still get the "unsupported" SIM card message when connecting the iPhone to iTunes 7.5 (of course I did a full reset of the settings before I made the connection). I read somewhere that in some cases it took 28 hours or more for the activation process, this actually indicates that this is a very "complex" story, not just an easy "generate a code" unlock. It is very likely that only ONE person at Apple or ONE department is allowed to issue unlock flags for the IMEIs, so this may be an explenation why it takes so long. I actually don't know the reason but right now I'm a little bit p.ss.d. My sales person communicated the IMEI of my iPhone to T-Mobile service in front of me, he repeated it twice and the guy on the phone also repeated it, so no mistake here possible. I just think that the unlock hasn't gone through yet, what a crappy method to offer an unlock. This also proves that Apple and T-Mobile don't like this situation at all, they do everything they can to make the unlock procedure a pain in the a.., annoying their customers.

Has somebody actually got the unlock activated, if yes HOW LONG did it take and how does it work when you swap cards back and forth?!

probably now the work is done by hand I think...so this is why it takes so long...when the phone comes out in France it would be automatic maybe.

Could be but I still doubt it, I think Apple just wants to make sure there is no leak on how the code is generated but of course this is a guess only.

The instructions at T-Mobile say that it takes MINIMUM 24 hours until the unlock is ready. I wait until tomorrow noon, this would mean around 36 hours. If it still doesn't work by then, I'll call customer commitment. I don't have any worries that the phone won't be unlocked, it will be but it is really annoying that it takes that long.

Forgot to add: according to a friend who works at Apple (NOT Apple store! ), the unlock process is something which is kept away even from employees, meaning that even Apple employees in higher positions don't get an unlock if they request it.
Not because it is THAT secret but because Apple wants to stick to their initial marketing model and they don't want to put unlocked iPhones onto the market.
France and Germany are exceptions, the Orange F unlocked iPhone exists due to french laws and the german T-Mobile unlocked iPhone exists due to a court order which T-Mobile hopes to dismiss with a final rulement in favor of their agreement with Apple. Don't let the rumours fool you: the same day the court allows T-Mobile/Apple to sell the locked iPhones without offering an unlocked iPhone to the general (non T-Mobile customer) public, the sale of unlocked 999 Euro iPhones stops IMMEDIATELY!

A buddy of mine who is a lawyer thinks that the court will allow T-Mobile/Apple to continue selling locked iPhones but with the change that they need to provide customers with an unlock code after the subscription expires in two years. T-Mobile can live with that and I suppose Apple too. In two years, it is very likely that the THIRD iPhone generation is on the market.

Btw: Even existing T-Mobile iPhone customers who got the first contracts between Nov. 9th and Nov. 18th 2007 DO NOT get the unlock! The court order demands only an unlock for the iPhones sold starting Nov. 19th. This again proves that T-Mobile/Apple DO NOT want to change ANYTHING in their agreement/subscription rules.

It's incredible that you got paid 999 Euro...and you still cannot use them!! It's insane!
Just write to Apple...calls...make some noise...whatever!

I think that the unlock was not ready yet, because the launch in France will be between 6 days...so now they have to speedup the process andmake it possible now! This would explain the delay....i hope...

I did NOT pay 999 Euro, I paid 399 Euro because I got a new contract (since I use the iPhone all the time it makes sense) because my daughter needed a subscription renewal in three months anyway, so I switched carriers with her (she's now on Vodafone).
Vodafone forwards all my "old" number calls to my new iPhone T-Mobile number for a small fee and my daugther got a new number with Vodafone. Pretty simple.

I thought about paying 999 Euro for a iPhone without subscription but it didn't make sense to me, especially since the T-Mobile iPhone contract is actually pretty good if you use the phone/data a lot like I do. At Vodafone, I usually had a 300-350 Euro monthly bill which was 200 Euro alone for telephony services (the other stuff is data which I still use for my laptops), so it is worth it. Visual Voicemail is also a nice feature to have and it is my understanding that T-Mobile is planning some sort of virtual GPS thingie with the iPhone, using Google Maps.

I think that the 999 Euro iPhones are some sort of "intermediate solution" which was never planned by Apple. This is why they need to MANUALLY add the unlock flag to the specific IMEI numbers and this may take a while if demand is/was high.

I did a search in the forum but could not find any related replies. There is a London based company that seems to have managed to enable OOB UK iPhone 1.1.2. with 4.6 boot loader to work with any O2 Sim. The state it doesn't work with any other network yet, I wonder if they found a way around teh boot loader isseu to make it work wit any O2 sim, including prepaid cards and cheap O2 susbscriptions.
