It is strange that I was refused purchase of an iphone in a UK carphone warehouse store, because I couldn't provide a bank account in the UK for 3 years. I could provide a postal address! If I wanted to purchase a iPhone as a paper weight, then I should have been entitled to. There should be no obligation on me to purchase a contract afterwards. Would I be correct in this assumption?
Since you were buying from Carphone Warehouse they were attempting to create a contract with you which requires a credit check. In order to do this they need to prove your identity which mainly requires proof of residence for 3 years. The bank account issue isn't something I'm familiar with, although it is a form of 'credit' meaning if you have a bank account and can prove residence for 3 years then they can consider you for an account. The Sale of Goods Act differs when buying things on hire-purchase (credit), for obvious reasons (they don't want to sell to someone who may be uncreditworthy). Carphone Warehouse employees might give the impression that they only sell iPhones with contract due to commissions, etc. Did you explicitly demand the phone without contract? Do you want a contract?

Regardless we know that buying one from an Apple store without contract is possible. If you then wanted a contract you could then go home and do it all via iTunes unless you do not have credit in the UK. Otherwise iTunes will tell you sorry, etc etc and instruct you to return the phone. Basically if you do not have any credit in the UK (a loan, credit card, bank account) and haven't been resident for 3 years, then it's unlikely they will offer you a contract.

However you may be able to (as reported on these boards) use an O2 pay and go monthly (Simplicity) or a top up as you go SIM. O2 themselves do not offer pay and go options to iPhone users automatically in case of credit failure, but you can buy a SIM card from their stores or online and insert it. Again check here first that it would work out of box. I've seen some threads on here about it, with all working okay except visual voicemail and the free Cloud hot spot offer. Not sure on the possibility of unlocking that phone yet due to the new BL. Cheers.

Let me just add that the issue you describe about Carphone Warehouse is definitely not unique to iPhones, but is their standard position whenever someone wants or needs a monthly service contract to go with ANY phone. (As I know from personal experience trying to get a monthly plan to go with my Sony Ericsson).
