Ok, I know this is my first post and possibly my only topic but I really need some help with this issue.

Just to let you know I live in the UK so my issue may differ slightly.

So, my friend got an Unlocked iPhone 1st Gen running 1.1.1. He put in his sim card, and it worked fine.
Now, the sim card he has put into the iPhone is an Orange PAYG, Orange opened up the iPhone late last year to all people who bought them on either PAYG or Contract, the Sim he put into the iPhone was not one that was bought with the iPhone.
When I had a brief look at the iPhone and found the Installer app, no Cydia.

Now, he wants to update to the latest version (3.1.2 OR 3.1.3), so he can play games on the App Store etc.

Hes asked me to help because I have an iPod Touch 2G which is Jailbroken, but I only know so much about Unlocking an iPhone, only that you have to be careful becuase it can block the iPhone if you make a mistake.

So, can someone please give us a method for upgrading to 3.1.2 (preferably) safely?

Stay away from 3.1.3 (it will work, but many apps and hacks are not yet updated)

Don't worry the 1st gen iPhones are pretty hard to break.
