Not sure if this is related or not, but last night I had a similar problem. Jus got home and turned on the phone to have it pickup my email from my wifi. I heard the beep for new email. Then left the phone on the desk for a while. When I came back later (maybe an hour or so), the screen wouldn't turn back on, no matter what. I know the battery was still pretty much full. I tried hitting the home buttom, sleep button, do a reset (home+sleep for six seconds) but nothing worked. Then I decided to plug it into the outlet. Still nothing. Left it there for about 5 minutes to go do something else. Then I came back and the screen was a back on to my email box, but not responding to anything. I then decided to try a reset again (home+sleep) which fortunately worked. The phone booted back up and was functioning properly again.
The only thing I did change before this happened was the regional format from US to a different setting (in settings-general-international-region format).
I changed it back to US setting again and rebooted the phone.
I think there might be a bug in the software which makes the phone un-responsive for a certain period of time. If your lock screen setting is set to 1 minute you probably won't be able to recover out of this. Mine was set to 3 minutes, but I have increased it to 5minutes now, but will probably set it to never.
You can try to ssh into the phone and reboot it manually through the ssh window by issuing the reboot command.
If that doesn't work, you could try to disconnect the battery to get a hard reset of the phone (which would involve opening up the phone).
I am running 1.1.1 activated/jailbreaked with carnaval 0.7
Hope this is of some use, PmgR

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I sent my phone into IpodJuice.com for a bettery replacement ($45 total) and am hoping that will fix the phone. If not, they said theyll reinstall the factory battery and only charge me $10+return shipping which is nice. If that ends up being the case I'll head to a different Apple store with one of the stories above and tell them I'll sign up right then and there if I can get a working phone.
I didnt realize you could cancel within 30 days without paying any early-cancellation fees.
I'm doing the battery replacement first to see if I can avoid ending up with a 1.1.2 that cant be unlocked but even if it does ends up that way Id rather be patient with a working iphone then complaining with broken one.
Thanks again for all your help.
