My iPhone shows no sign of connection:
1. no USB device show up in device manager(PC) or System profiler(Mac)
2. iTunes does not recognize the phone
3. iPhones does not show charging battery icon
(it is charging 'cos after stayed connected for few hours, it shows full battery after a reboot!)

I tried these:
1. reboot iPhone many times
2. three different cables
3. four different computers (Mac's and PCs), all USB 2.0
4. another iPhone works with all above cables and computers
5. unload and reload com.apple.ptpd

Before you say it is hardware issue: I have another iPhone having exactly the same issue! Co-incidence?

One thing I haven't tried: put the phone in recovery mode so that I can restore it.
Reason: what if it doesn't work? How am I going to get it out of recovery mode? If I can't I cannot use it at all!

Any idea? Anyone had such experience? Will the recovery mode worth trying?

Actually, you should try putting it in recovery mode to see if itunes picks it up... if it doesn't, no big deal, just reboot the iphone out of recovery.

It sounds to me like a simple drivers issue... what iTunes ver are you running?
If itunes does not even see it in DFU mode then it is definitely a driver issue.

Start iTunes and press ctrl-alt-del, check processes and see if "applemobiledeviceservice.exe" is running.

Don't sweat it... 2 iphones, same problem? It is your PC's config that is missing some drivers... Download iBrickr and run it with iTunes running.

i have the same problem of sylvester .. when i connect my iphone to the computer, itunes cannot detect it or when i connect it to the charger, the battery icon doesn't apear buy after few hour, its full charge.
any help plzzz ?
