Default Help From Canadians! Rogers SIM & Unlocked Firmware 1.0.2

BACKGROUND: Three weeks ago I unlocked my iPhone using Unlock.app and the instructions posted at http://modmyiphone.com. Yes, I had firmware 1.0.2 on board; still do, never "upgraded" to firmware 1.1.1. The unlock process went as described in the instructions, and after the unlock, I had access to all iPhone functions that didn't require a phone account.

PROBLEM: AFter unlocking the phone, I went to a Rogers store in Nova Scotia and bought a pay-as-you-go card. Then I waited for the Rogers icon to appear on my iPhone and I'm still waiting. Initially there was a problem with Rogers' online card activation process. I now have that straightened out, and have the phone number assigned to me by Rogers and a security access number. What I still don't have is a Rogers signal. I know the signal is strong enough where I am, because my brother's AT&T iPhone picks up Rogers here just fine. So, HELP!

I know 1000's of Canadians successfully use their iPhones with Rogers. My question is how? I thought a pay-as-you-go card would at least get me phone operation (I don't care about Rogers data access--I get all I need via various WI-FI networks).

I'm stumped and I know if I CALL Rogers and mention my iPhone, they'll throw up their hands and tell me it's impossible. I'd appreciate suggestions about what I should do next. If I take my Rogers SIM to a Rogers store, will they be able to slip it into another brand of phone to see if the SIM is working? Thanks in advance for advice.

Put your pay&go card in another phone and see if it works.
if it does then the question is how did did you activat the phone??
if you have windows instert your new sim card, use winstaller to jailbreak the phone then use Pacay to activate it.
if you have a MAC then use independence to activate.
essentitally you have to activate the new sim card in the phone to make it work properly.
    hope this helps.

While Rogers will not support iPhones and their activation, they'll gladly take your money. They will help to get your phone working to a point, but officially, they'll not say.

One thing you don't mention in your problem: are you using a Rogers SIM card in the phone or the original SIM that came with the phone? Sorry to be condescending, but you don't mention having a Rogers account already. A "pay as you go" card is just a scratch ticket you use to get pre-bought time on the rogers network, not the little memory card that goes into the top of the phone.
Can I sync my iPhone to my Newton?

Thanks, the_gts. I'm going back to Rogers to see if the pay&go works in another phone. I unlocked my iPhone with the Rogers SIM in it, but I may have skipped the activation step. After I confirm the Rogers SIM works, I'll start from scratch with iTunes (making sure I don't get stick with Firmware 1.1.1) and then activate and unlock with the Rogers SIM in the phone.

    Thanks again for your help.

Contrary to what people here are saying, I was actually able to contact Rogers support (PDA's and Blackberry's) and the man on the phone helped me with the iPhone. Not some beat around the bush help either, he actually helped me change settings on my phone to get it working. And guess what, it worked.

Unfortunately I am not using Pay-as-you-go but to my understanding the Pay as you go with Rogers is not a SIM card so I am not sure how you are activating? Are you using an actual Rogers SIM activated as Pay as you go??

Also, you should restore and unlock with the AT&T SIM.

Can you tell us what settings you used and what the processes was that he walked you though. I have 'bricked' an iPhone attempting to use a Rodgers SIM and I don't want to do it again. Any details.. number they gave you.... if they supplied an unlock code... ect ect ect helps.

    Thanks,
    -Nx

    DeadRobot--

You are SO right about Rogers. The store rep sold me a Pay&Go card and said, "Comes with $25 of service, and you can activate it from home for free." Turned out the CARD cost $25, with not a cent of service, AND then Rogers charged me another $25 fee for activating from home!

I'm using the SIM card Rogers gave me when I bought the pay&go card. (Not condescending at all to ask ANY question, however "obvious"--that question may turn out to be the magic key.) I have the original AT&T SIM in a drawer, the Rogers SIM in the iPhone, and a pay/go card in my wallet.

I did not have a Rogers account before I bought the pay&go card and Rogers SIM. My understanding was that I could access Rogers' system by creating a new account. Was I wrong about that?

All I know is that I have a Rogers SIM in my iPhone, but Rogers' network will not recognize it. I took the Rogers SIM back to the store today and watched it work just fine in a different cell phone.

Do you also think I will need to activate and unlock my iPhone WHILE the Rogers SIM is in the iPhone? Or am I already toast?

    Thanks.

    Hi BobbyT--

I contacted the Rogers Network Support Group today to see why my Rogers SIM isn't working. Unfortunately, I did not get your helpful tech. My tech told me, "Apple has put in place a new software program that blocks "unauthorized" iPhone use in Canada." I pointed out that "the software" was Firmware 1.1.1 and that my iPhone was using Firmware 1.02 instead, the same firmware used all over Canada to connect with Rogers. At that point the tech basically said iPhones don't work with Rogers and that was that.

Would you mind posting the Rogers telephone number you called, the company division, and--miracle of miracles--the tech's name? Perhaps you randomly hit paydirt, but for my sake, I hope not.

    Thanks.

I went down to a Rogers store, told the rep I wanted a Pay/Go account, and he sold me a Pay/go plastic card and a Rogers SIM.

I want to get this straight about the restore and unlock process. Are you SURE I should use my AT&T SIM to do that? Some users say "Restore and unlock with the Rogers SIM." And still others say "Restore and activate with AT&T SIM, then unlock with the Rogers SIM.

    Thanks.

My suggestion, assuming you're confident you are unlocked.

    use iNdependence 1.2.1a
    http://code.google.com/p/independence/

If not on a Mac, pity. I guess iBrickr + PACAY.

    1. Put your Rogers SIM in.
    2. Deactivate your phone.
    3. Reactivate your phone.

No need to restore. I do this every time I want to swap SIMs between AT&T and/or Rogers.
