Default Have ATT, want Iphone on current plan

I have read that older iphones can use att sims without being unlocked, only activated, is this also true with the new OTB 1.1.2 firmwares as well? Eg. Can I take the Att sim out of my current phone, put in the iphone, activate and have the phone work?

While activating through iTunes, you may be able to activate it using your old number

I have tried successfully with a prepaid gophone card so you should be able to do it. I placed the AT&T sim card that i wanted to use and then restored from 1.1.2 to 1.0.2 then performed jailbreak and activation. You can then upgrade if you like.
