Default Going to Paris tonight should I try to get an unlock

I am a pilot on my way to paris tonight. So here is what I may do and some questions about it.

I am in FR, Be, and most of Europe so a orange chip might be a good idea. So I am thinking of trying to see if I buy a chip for my iphone on orange will they unlock my cell in order to swap out the two.

I have a US 1.1.2 4.6 already active on ATT and also have a tmobile account and sim chip for a different phone.

Would it be possible to see if they will sell an account and a sim chip, unlock my iphone to use it? Also once it is unlocked can I swap chips and still sync to itunes with different chips i.e. if unlocked att to tmobile to orange?

Will be there by 12 noon tommarow and have several french speakers going with so the language should not be a problem. Looking for any and all input.

If they are willing to do it, you do get a full unlock, and you will be able to use it with every SIM out there.

And why not try? If they say no, you can just play dumb and say that you thought that you would be able to do that.

Very interesting situation. So you have a phone activated with ATT right now in the US

On Tmobile if you are going out of country and will be using the cellphone you purchased with out of country sim, you can call Tmobile to request unlock code for your cellphone. I heard ATT offers similar option for customer traveling abroad who won't be using ATT sim card. ATT should allow you to use an Orange Simcard. Actually outside of US ATT has no juristiction on what simcard you use.

Keep us posted! (you might want to call up ATT and ask them how they will handle it first)

you should have a look at this post of un4:

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/show...&postcount=123

he claims that if you are an existing orange customer they would unlock any iphone for an amount of 100.
(they do an unlock during the first 6 months in every case for 100 if you buy an iphone with contract. after this time they unlock it for free. french law.) So try and find somebody who is already an orange customer and let them unlock your us iphone....

    keep us informed...

    good luck!

I have been following a discussion on frenchiphone.com on whether Orange France would unlock a US iPhone if you signed up for an Orange France service plan. Some notes:

    1. The thread that originally reported this as possible has now reached 12+ pages, and the most recent posts suggest that Orange France will NOT do this for US iPhones.

    2. Even if they would consider doing it, I think they would require you to sign up for a 1 or 2 year plan, something most cell carriers will not offer to non-residents (since they have ni local credit history or assets). I don't think they'd ever consider it for just a pay-as-you-go type of plan.

    3. A real good question is whether they will sell an unlocked iPhone (for the 649 + 100 price) to a non-French citizen.

I'm not sure Orange France even knows how to unlock the phone today, so you should come back visit France in 2008

The official unlock involves a code that is unique to each phone's IMEI, so even if you could sniff it out, it wouldn't help any other phone.

In France it is illegal for an operator to sell a phone that can't be unlocked.
The operator must unlock a phone at the request of the user. If the phone is heavily subsidisied the operator can charge a fee for unlocking the phone ; however after 6 months it must be done for free.

The operator must also sells an unlocked version of the phone.
Forcing someone to buy something is illegal in France , it's called "Vente forcee".

For example ; you can not force someone to purchase a pack of items. In theory, you could get a pack of 4 batteries ; and ask to only buy one and leave the remaining 3s if the store do not sell batteries individually.

so if you want an unlock iphone , legally ; you can either buy an iphone in France using an Orange SIM card and ask to unlock the phone after 6 months or buy the iPhone outright with no subsidies from the operator.

Welcome to the European Community ; you can not , not sell because of your country of origin ; it would be considered as discrimination.
If you can buy the phone without signing a plan ; then you can buy the iPhone wether you're French, American, Iraqis etc...
