There cannot be any difference in firmware. How would iTunes determine which one to download to you? For that matter, how would you download different iTunez. This is global world and people travel. If you are in Timbaktoo and need to restore your iPhone, how would it determine which firmware to send you?

Well I'm pretty sure most french people don't download iTunes in english. Therefore they go to apple.fr instead of apple.com
Therefore there is a slight difference in iTunes, and could be directed to a different repository.
Once again I'd like to know from those that have french iPhones, when they first restore/update is their phone already in french or if they need to select a different language?
This will tell us that there is a slight difference in firmware. Who knows

I have downloaded iTunes from www.apple.fr/itunes - all in French, and tried. I have several comúputers and several operating systems. It makes no difference in what happens. I cannot unlock my phone though I paid for the unlock.
Oh, and the iphone picks up the language from itunes. When I connecti it to iTunes in English, it speaks English, French - it speaks Freanch.

When I got my Orange France iphone is was in English. When I activated / unlocked it stayed in English. It was activated with a French iTunes account.
