Question [Engadget] iPhones upgraded to 1.1.3 can't be downgraded?

Not to say it's actually easy to get your hands on the rumored 1.1.3 firmware at this point, but in the event that you do, proceed with caution. Nate True, the guy that brought us a video walkthrough of the supposedly leaked goods, is reporting that he can't seem to downgrade to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 after performing the install. Locked phones show an "Incorrect SIM" error -- a problem unlockers of yore are all too familiar with -- while previously unlocked phones can't be upgraded to 1.1.3 at all. Let's be honest, though: if you somehow managed to score a copy of 1.1.3, is that really going to stop you from going for it?

Fun news: Downgrading from iPhone 1.1.3 bricks your phone (restrictions apply)

If your iPhone has never been unlocked, downgrading from 1.1.3 will leave you bricked until you upgrade back to 1.1.3, as far as I can tell. The phone (even with an authentic AT&T SIM) reports an Incorrect SIM while iTunes says there's no SIM at all, when you've downgraded back to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 (1.0.x untested).

If your phone was unlocked, the baseband upgrade fails on 1.1.3, so you will not have this problem but will not get 1.1.3 to work.

Obviously this may change once Apple releases the firmware officially but I do not count that as likely.

So 1.1.3 should have a new baseband... all you'll need is the new sepack, so you'll be able to ierase and put back any old baseband... (of course, only bl-3.9 phones, as bl-4.6 phones will ask for a NEWER secpack that doesn't exist)

That is nothing new, same for any new firmware/baseband ever released. happened in 1.0.2 -> 1.1.1 and 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2 too

Tate, I know you're trying to keep everyone informed, but everything you've posted is in the 1.1.3 thread already. The forum is already so crowded with everyone asking the same questions, don't need repeat info too =)
