So you are right now on 1.0.2:
Open itunes, connect the iphone and hold power and home button at the same time until you see a yellow triangle on the screen of the iphone.
Then itunes should told you that you have an iphone on recovery mode just restore to the FW version you want

Did you try putting the phone in DFU mode?
-
I had the exact same thing happen to me.
YOu have to get the phone into DSU mode.
I'd need to check back but I think you have to hold the home and power button for 20 seconds EXlACTLY ( use the timer on the computer). YOu then let the power button go and hold until you get a blank ( black) screen.
If you have it plugged into the computer with Itunes running, it should then kick in.
get back and let us know how you get on - if it dont work I'll check back on what I did later

This rebooting problem happens with older versions of itunes as far as I am aware.
If you do NOT have the latest version of iTunes then download it... I hope that helps!

As some of the other posters have hinted - it's happenned before.
What is need for you to do is provide MORE info on what your computer system is and what versions of software you have. (iTunes, iPhone, MAC or PC)
If you have access to a MAC use Independence it will 'kick' the 'phone out of it's loop.
And you dont really have to be so precise on the timing to get the 'phone into DFU mode - Hold the home button and the power button UNTIL the Apple icon disappears - at that time release the power button and continue to hold the home button for about 10 secs.
If when you release the home button iTunes hasnt recognised the 'phone just take it out of its dock and replug it back in - iTunes should recognize it. sometimes you can also just restart iTunes and let it find the 'phone.
But above all dont think the 'phone is useless - It's going to be OK

This happened to me twice.
First try to shut it down. Hold the power buttom until it turns off.
Plug it into your PC.
Then press once to turn it on, and the when the apple logo appears hold the power buttom and the home buttom together. Stay holding both of them until it changes the screen. If you are on 1.1.1 it will display itunes icon with a cable, and if you are on 1.0.2 it will display a yellow triangle.
After that, open itunes and it should recognize, and say that you iphone is in Restore mode.
Then just hit restore to restore to 1.1.2, or shift + restore and select the firmware you want to restore.
