Default Edge and the iphone in canada

I've looked at a few threads, but haven't found an answer that I'm looking for...

I've got an unlocked iphone in canada that is on the Rogers network.

There appears to be an "E" in the top hand left corner of the iphone next to the Rogers symbol. My question is, does that mean im currently connected to edge all the time and being charged for it? When I try to use any iphone applications it says Edge is deactivated and I can't use them, but why is the "E" still there? Ive also checked my usage and it says 0 bytes, so thats good.

I just want to make sure that I'm not getting screwed and charged all the time! I'm assuming the "E" is just there to show edge could become available. Rogers are pure evil and I don't want to get screwed by them. Thanks for any answers!!

Your correct, the E just lets you know you can have access to the edge network if you need to. In your iPhon settings, under network and then select edge, your APN should be internet.com, no need for a user name or password, this works for me on the Rogers network. You can also see how much data you have sent and received in your settings under usage.

I have the iphone on rogers too. The E just means edge is available. The E will disappear if you go out of the city where there is no edge. It does not mean you are connected. You can prove that to yourself by watching the usage numbers.
