Please clarify for me one more time...
I apologize in advance for re-asking a question, but I've read through all 12 pages of this thread and seem to be finding conflicting answers.
I have an out-of-the-box 1.1.1 iphone. I would absolutely LOVE to be able to install 3rd party apps AND keep my functioning AT&T account. I have absolutely no desire to unlock the iphone for a "regular" AT&T sim, any other provider, or for any other reason.
I've seen posts within this thread both confirming and denying that an otb 1.1.1 phone, once downgraded to 1.0.2, will allow you to continue to use your existing iPhone AT&T plan. This is of course not touching the baseband stuff, as I'm not looking to start f'ing with things at that level...
Within this thread I've seen the following:

but does a standard AT&T iPhone plan (my existing plan) still work, or do i _have_ to unlock it? Also, assuming everything goes as planned and the downgrade to 1.0.2 goes smoothly... once it's done, do I need to re-activate my phone, or will it "just work"? do i need to be careful not to restore any backups, as i'm sure i read somewhere in this thread?

this sounds like my exact situation, which is promising, EXCEPT i don't believe e1com's phone was out-of-the-box 1.1.1, it was upgraded from 1.0.2 ...?

but what about going directly from 1.1.1 -> 1.0.2, as i read somewhere that going to 1.0.1 actually DOES try to revert baseband firmware (maybe i have that wrong)? and could that possibly have been because he restored a backup as opposed to re-activating the phone?

compredez?
this scares me... is this the final answer on the subject, am i basically screwed? also, does "NO phone function" mean literally _NO_ phone function, or does it mean no unlocked phone function, but it will still work with my existing AT&T iPhone account?

Not too sure, about the unlocked ones with "Any sim" As soon as I restored mine, I chose "set up as new phone" Just make sure you do it that way, and not choose the option that says restore from "Backup". The downfall is you loose everything including your contacts.

i'm fine with loosing all my contacts and starting over, as long as i can get 1.0.2 + apps and keep my AT&T phone working... but again, does this apply to a out-of-the-box 1.1.1 phone?
There's a lot of good information here and I appreciate any help you guys can give. I'm just trying to wade through it all...
I guess the abbreviated question is simply: If I downgrade an out-of-the-box 1.1.1 to 1.0.2, will I be able to install apps AND keep my existing AT&T iPhone plan (meaning my phone function will continue to work) with no need to do any unlocking or baseband downgrades? Even if i have to do the activation process again, and loose all my contacts, etc... that's no problem, i'll start from scratch, it's brand new anyway
Thanks again in advance.
