Default Don't know where to start?

Hey guys, first of all I should give you the credit for helping people all around the world free of charge. That's amazing. I know there are lots of topics concerning unlocking iphones, but my problem is a bit complicated. I just don't know where to start. Couple of days ago my father bought me an iphone from UAE. (by the way I live in turkey, both countries are places where iphone is not being sold officially). The problem is I just don't know if my iphone is unlocked. I know you would say why don't you just plug your simcard in and see it yourself, but there lies a bigger problem. In Turkey phones purchased abroad must be registered by a communication association. Any simcard plugged without registering the phone results in a dead phone. And registering takes some time. I know it's been a very long question, so I'll try to make it simpler. When I switch on iphone without a simcard I can access the springboard, surf youtube and stuff... But when I try to sync some music into iphone i just can't manage to do so. iTunes recognizes my iphone, gives me the software version (1.1.1), serial number and so. But i just cannot drag music files onto iphone on the left hand side menu. Does it mean that my iphone is locked or what? An activation page never popped up when i first plug iphone to my pc. What should I do? I appreciate any help, thanks in advance...

Hi ( Merhaba ). Fist you should have used the search function ...
The only way you can check an see if it is unlocked is to insert a sim card in it..
if you have a unactive sim card you should be able to do this without letting them no. or if unsure use viginizer and then unlock but u still need to put you sim in it to unlock ....
and itunes has nutting to do with the phone being locked ( SIM Locked ).. i mean if it is sim locked you can still use everything except the phone part...

    Cool

    Merhaba

Get yourself a cheap pre-paid sim card and test it. This will 100% NOT kill your phone [from the telco] because that is what 100.000's of tourists do every year

    Cheers,
    mokum

Thnx for the replies, and merhaba back ! what do you think causing sync problem. I cannot drag music onto iphone. Is it because it doesnt't have sim card plugged. I cannot think of anything else...

To drag and drop you need to disable automatic sync and put the iPhone into 'manual' mode. This can be done via iTunes - but the fact that you can see the SpringBoard and Youtube etc and use it via Wifi says that phone is activated (and is very likely unlocked or unlockable).

Also, be careful trying it with a pre-paid SIM card. I don't know anything about Turkey and it's cell providers but if those providers require you to register your IMEI your phone will still lock down. I doubt this is the case though - otherwise if I visited turkey with my Canadian iPhone you would lock it just because I was roaming - and that doesn't make any sense.

All iTunes functions are already in manual mode. I realized that the problem lies in the iphone because I can drag and drop files onto my 5th gen ipod. Do you think the only way is to wait till my iphone's IMEI is registered and then to virginize and unlock again? thanks...

Everything becomes clearer and clearer as I cram the forum. It's amazing what you guys've managed here. One last question if a revirginize and re-unlock my 04.01.13_G iphone does the IMEI # change? If it does it's a really big problem for me. Appreciate any help...
