Yes. They keep track of all your information and plant a tracking chip in your hand upon purchase. If you dare unlock your iphone, your phone-hand will explode.

It's a known fact that your iphone sends its IMEI to Apple each time you check Weather or Stocks... So if I were in Apple's shoes and see that the cities in your weather app are half across the globe from the closest Apple-authorized country (US, UK, etc) I'd know you're 99% unlocked.

Do they charge any fine for unlocking?
Has anyone had such an experience
I sent it as a gift.

First, unlocking is legal. At least in the US. So, no, they don't charge anything... When I said that the IMEI is sent to Apple, I simply meant that it's possible to infer which iphones may be unlocked... but that doesn't mean that Apple does in fact track down unlockers.... What for?

I don't think they do anything. Considering the fact that I know people here in Greece that have their iPhones for about 10 months and they never had any problems. Unless if their fines (and mine also) are on their way

I don't think that you should be worried about anything. Even with that way (a non AT&T contract), Apple still makes tons of money.

I doubt they will do anything . It probably just validates on your IMEI so that people dont rip the code and use apple serversf or the data that is being requested. [ On Other types of phone or internet apps ]

you paid for it. it's yours. you can do what' u want with your iphone. change the color, put in new sim or even break it if you like to just that when you did some thing to the phone like unlock, don't complaint to steve jobs and ask for replacement.
Seriously, they are willing to sell that for you and hope u sign a contract with att or other official carriers so they can make more loyalty money but they sure understand a small percentage of iphone sold are not sign up with phone services. that's the reason they try their best to update firmware, bootloader, or basband to render unlock iphones useless. Lucky there are lots of smart people willing to cracking and hacking apple software/firmware so we can enjoy our iphone as the way we want it, not apples way
