I mean for a jailbroken, apptapp'd 1.1.1, do I need to run INdependence to unlock it w/ anySIM?

yes to unlock with anysim 1.1 you need to activate with independence or use a manual method

Two points:
1. Yes, you will need to activate it in order to be able to run anySIM and perform the unlock itself.
2. And yes, after you unlock the phone and it's upgraded to 1.1.1, the phone may still need to be activated for the non-ATT SIM you want to use.
Unlocking and activation are two different (but related) things. To use a non-ATT SIM your phone (a) has to be unlocked, and (b) the non-ATT SIM needs to be activated.
To complete task (a) you have to activate as well, so some people will have to activate in order to get access to their phone so they can run anySIM, and then after anySIM is unlocked and you want to use a non-ATT SIM, you may have to run iNdependence to activate that non-ATT SIM.
