Default Damn.... what kind of Iphone do I have? Solutions?

Hi guys...I have this problem.....I know quite strange one...but that's it...
I am italian and I live in ITALY.
I have bought in the USA a USED Iphone, 8Gb one, bought from a guy who used it for a couple of weeks then sold it to me on ebay.

The week of manufacture is week 39.

I asked the guy whether he activated or unlocked the iphone and he told me NO, that he used a regular AT&T sim so he regularly activated everything with Itunes then used the phone with the regular AT&T sim.

He told me that he upgraded to 1.1.1 (but he's not sure if he did.....)

    FOR SURE I can say:
    - as soon as I turned the iphone on (with no sim in it, I was not given the AT&T sim) the phone worked perfectly. it says NO SIM and the phone functions don't work, of course, but everything else work (safari, youtube, wi-fi, google maps, stocks, Itunes...)
    - On upper left I see "NO SIM"
    - If I put an italian sim in the phone, after asking me the pin, it says it's a wrong sim, asking me to insert the correct sim.
    - here are the info about version:
    Version: 1.1.1 (3A109a)
    Modem Firmware: 04.01.13_G

So I need to know......how can I understand what has been already done to my iphone? Is it normal that everything but phone capabilities work, with the only Itunes activation????
And moreover.....what do I have to do to activate phone capabilities?
I am not sure if I have to activate, unlock or what else.....

Of course I would like to to have 1.1.2 on my Iphone, in order to have Italian already installed plus other stuff.

In conclusion, I am asking help to understand how to check what has already been done to my iphone, if it's possible to upgrade to 1.1.2 and fully activate/unlock the phone, or I just can keep the 1.1.1 and unlock (?) it.....

I hope everything is clear.....if not, or you need more info, please ask.
THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH for all who will help me.....!!!
    :p :p :p :p

    P.s.: I own a PC (NOT a mac)

I would say that you should revirginize and then do everything as guided in this forum. That would be the safest way for you.

lol... don't randomly tell people what to do unless you have done it and are quite sure about it!

OP has an iTunes activated iPhone. It's a good news. You can upgrade it to 1.1.2 and unlock it right away. Reference another thread titled "Ultimate Guide blahblah unlock 1.1.2 blahblah" on the forum.
